They told her if ever she finds anyone with the Millennium Puzzle, that is her brother or sister.

𝓓𝓾𝓮𝓵𝓲𝓼𝓽 𝓚𝓲𝓷𝓰𝓭𝓸𝓶 : Mayumi took the book about the Legend of the Princess' powers and the creation of the Millennium Items. That was when Pegasus had found her, took her in and kept her trapped in the castle at Duelist Island.

On Duelist Island, Pegasus held her captive due to the Millennium Bracelet around her wrist. He held her there as prisoner inside the Shadow Realm he created with his Millennium Eye. Until, Yami found her within it and saved her. The Bracelet and Puzzle felt a pull towards each other so Yami became very protective of her.

In due time, she was adopted by Yugi and his grandfather. Although, she was afraid to duel that is why Yugi and Yami and each one of their friends even Seto and Mokuba Kaiba had given chosen cards for Mayumi to be her Guardian Cards so that she may never be afraid to Duel again.
