She ran the quarter mile downhill to the gate, then slipped through and waited by the side of the road. Her abdomen cramped and her eyelids swelled. Her armpits perspired and she drooled onto her chin.
Not good. They bit me. No sense waiting here. No one is coming. I'm pretty sure that I'm over Vincent now. She giggled. I hope there's coffee in heaven for Mia. We'll bury her next to Mom and Dad. Daisy would sing. I'll paint a memorial picture. Josh would help too.
Skylar stumbled down the road. Her feet slapped on the asphalt. So peaceful. The rain stopped for a moment, the clouds parted, and the moonlight shone down. A cricket sang. If I die like this, it'll be okay. But if I live, I'll never keep another secret. No more magic, either.
Then, the rumble of an engine. The glow of headlights. I'll miss her so much. A squeak of brakes. Skylar stuck out her thumb. The driver stopped the car and leaned over. It was the tow-truck driver with red hair. His eyes widened and he flung open the passenger door. As Skylar climbed in, shaking, a spider slipped out from the hair at her temples. It shone bright red and wriggled underneath her eyelid.
