The planet was nothing, but a place controlled and decimated by the elements. Over time the elements produced the first living creatures, the elemental Primordial's. These Primordial's fought over the planet. Shaping and destroying it in their own image as they fought. Over time some of the Primordial's were tired of fighting and learned to have companions with one another.
The offspring became the Primordial's of life. They started to work on making the world a place outside of the war of the others. The world changed, the Primordial's realized they were no longer the only ones around. A new type came to be and changed many of how things worked. The gods and goddesses came and took over many of the roles of the Primordial's. They deemed the Primordial's as monsters and ones that don't care about life.
More and more beings were created which were the elves, the Firbolgs, Aasimars and more to resemble the gods. The last to be created were the humans. The gods didn't want the humans to get involved with the way's things were between the races. But unfortunately, when the humans came the other races didn't like how weak they were and constantly fought with them. Humans at the time were mostly cattle but some learned magic from those that cared about them.
The millennia went on and finally after much fighting a treaty had been made between the humans and non-humans and life became different. The human villages grew into towns then large cities and they avoided contact with those of the supernatural. The humans that did have innate magic abilities kept to themselves to stay hidden and keep from learning about it. To them they felt that magic was an abomination.
The government had their own ways of dealing with those of magic abilities. They would hunt and take them to secret places to be used to make mankind better. Those that refused were never heard of again. There were still squabbles every so often between mankind and the non-humans but for the most part things were peaceful. However, those of the non-humans always found ways to gain entry into man kinds world and it sometimes caused problems but sometimes it was a boon for mankind.
Alas with the way mankind progressed making destructive technology the wars ended. A treaty between both the nonhumans and the humans was formed keeping them separated. If a nonhuman entered the human territory they had to be watched and go through much to make sure they weren't a threat. But that all ended when the clouds of fire, ash, radiation and an unknown taint destroyed the world.
