Another Kind of Heartache

A small drabble of my character Athena. This hints to events in her story. This was written around January of this year.

"I wish you would have slept in the guest room, cause maybe I'd still feel alive without you,"

A thick fog settled on the earth, and the light drizzle kissed the ground. Athena surveyed what she could with cold eyes. Rage flowed through her veins and warmed her core, but sorrow made her heart cold. The one time she let her walls fall she was cut to pieces. Her heart ached, and there was no cure for that kind of pain.

What she thought was pure, turned out to be something much darker. She couldn't believe the horror he has put her through. Worse, she still loved him even after it all. After all the betrayal and heartbreak, she just wanted to be back in his arms. Athena's breath wavered, her slow pace came to halt. Tears welled in her eyes, everything about this was wrong. Her knees buckled under a weight that became all too much. Mud splatted across her pants as she sunk down.

Athena remembers him saying, "I love you, mi Corazon." It once flooded her with warmth, but now she felt cold. Her breath hitched as she choked back a sob. Her calloused fingers ran across her damp skin, only to shudder from her own memories. She wished she had never lain with him; allowed his mouth to explore her body, or his hands to caress her. The feeling now made her sick to her stomach.

"It was all a lie, I would never love you. We are far too different," Is what he said to her. At that moment he had the most sinister look as he plunged the knife in her stomach.

With a sneer, he leaned down and whispered, "You're far too human. I don't aim for the peace you want; I want to see blood." He twisted the knife and ripped it out. Her scream has pierced the all too quiet air. Blood seeped into her shirt and poured onto the rich ground of the autumn court.

"Starting with your's," He purred, disappearing from her fading view. That day had been warm and beautiful, but it felt cold and ugly. Athena fell back with only the leaves to catch her. She might have died that day if that fae had not taken pity on her.

She grimaced at the memory. It was far too soon to be thinking about the fresh wound. Athena shook her head; she must have looked pitiful sitting in the mud like she was. Swallowing her feelings she stood up using the support of a nearby tree.

Athena stopped mid-rise, her body went rigid. She had been so focussed on mending her broken heart, and keeping her anger at bay that she didn't even think about his words. The words, 'I don't aim for peace,' and 'I want to see blood.' repeated in her head. At the time they had meant nothing to, but now they had a whole new weight.

It was no secret their realm was on the brink of war. The faeries and humans relationship was strained; the treaty they had forged hundreds of years ago was breaking. It started with the destructions of the human kingdom, Pyragon, and has since gotten worse.

The horror of the realization hit her. Her eyes went wide with unfathomable terror.

"He's going to start a war," Athena breathed out. She couldn't believe it. Not only had she loved him, but she also believed he had a good heart. After all the shit he put her through, the anger and anguish she experienced through him, Athena still thought there was good in him. Fear slid down and coated her bones, he was a monster.

Athena was just another pawn in his game.

"I'm the one who kissed you first and took my clothes off,"
