After rushing to the lab to test for any matches in the system, a distressing answer came back to the station. The hair turned up to have no matches leaving us back at square 1. It wasn't the most exciting news I've ever received but yet, I still was relaxed.
With no lead suspect and no evidence linking anyone to the killing, there was nothing we could really do. All that filled everyone in the force was hope. Hope that a call with a tip or, hopefully, a confession would come in. I was not doubtful that soon we would hear something from someone on the girl yet, time was against us.
I sat at my desk, writing my first responder report based on our entry into the house. The paperwork associated with the job is another thing I dislike about it. Report after report, you start to develop a pattern with your writing. Setting out a template for each and every one as you write paper after paper all by hand. I along wait for the day that writing is demolished.
As I sit and write, my hand gliding over the paper with a swift movement as the black point pen caresses the page, a light appears on my desk's landline. This was it, this was the call we were waiting for. I just knew it; I could feel it in my gut.
A second after the light appeared, the phone starts to ring gracious bell. Without hesitation, I picked up the phone and answered with a calm and cool "Hello, Officer Jim Roger speaking."
Just after I spoke to the other person on the line, a deep voice replied.
"Hello, Jim. How are you and Jodie today?"
Once the voice had reached my ears, I knew exactly who it was. I take a scan of the room before ducking under my desk, holding the phone closely to my face with my hands tightly gripped around the phone.
"Look, you shit, I saw your little note. You think your funny? You think that would scare me? Huh, boy are you wrong. What are you trying to do here? You dam right should know you will NEVER be able to get me!" I aggressively whispered into the mic.
A laugh rang out on the other side.
"Hahaha, oh Jim, whenever will your ego come back down to earth? You got it all wrong, brother. I don't want to catch you. Oh no... I simply want to end you. You see, you crossed the wrong person back in Grand Forks. Someone people like you fear to never come face to face with. I assure you, when I get my hands on you, which I will, hell will have its day on earth."
"Fuck you! If you ever think I would let someone like you get near someone like me, you are deeply mistaken. No matter what the fuck you think you can do, I am always two steps ahead." Letting the voice know who was the dominate one.
"Jim, I am going to be very straight forward with you; Your life, like many people you seemed to have gotten to now well, will soon come to an end. And I, will go on with my life in peace again." At this point, my face was bright red, sweat dripping down my face as I tried to keep hidden from my co-workers.
"...And what if you don't get me? What if I disappear again before you can get a gold on me? Vanish from thin air while not leaving any trace to my where I may be. Try and find me now" Even though on the phone I sounded calm, inside, I was panicking. Ready to just leave town and never come back at this time. Drive somewhere where no one would ever hear from me. Somewhere like Canada and their dense forest. A place where a scream could carry on for miles in the wind but never be heard. A place suitable for me; Oh Canada.
The voice answered my question in a cocky tone. The same tone he had been using the whole phone call.
"I will get you, just you wait. I found you know. What makes you think I cannot do it again? I know every step you take. Every place you go. You may think your small brain is bright, but it really is not. Just you wait. You will feel nothing but honour for me. Also, I think you should take Jodie outside once in a while. Seems like she might need some vitamin D." Just after, the phone hung up with a buzzing indicating so. I put the phone back on the stand and brought my body up to my desk. Once propped up in my chair, I simply just go back to work, continuing to fill out my report.
