Chapter 2

Peta

I had slept very badly last night. My mind was plagued by the terrible scene that had taken Natan away from me in the most disconcerting way. He seemed very angry and apparently it would not be anything easy to get a hold of the whole situation involving both of us. But I should try to make him understand everything.

That way, college classes were ignored by me.

My anguish had blocked me and I could not pay any attention to anything that the teachers were talking about that day in the classroom.

The lessons seemed to be being spoken in a different language that I did not be familiar with.

But in fact, the problem was in me. The problem was exactly me.

The padlock was in my mind and I could only see the image of Nathaniel.

At the end of the class, I sought a prudent way to approach him and ended up seeing him down the hall.

He was alone, standing, and with his head down. His expression was not friendly and I could see it as soon as I approached him and he gave me that fast look of hatred, disgust, and enmity.

At last, his eyes lowered and he stared at his own moss-colored knit shirt. An English phrase was stamped in the direction of his chest.

"Natan, please, you must listen to me now!"

My voice sounded tender.

"No, Peta, I stopped being an idiot! And it's all over between us!" He finished looking at the next wall. It seemed to be difficult for him to face me at that moment. "So, please, leave me alone!"

"No, Natan, we cannot end this way!" My hands gripped his arms and I tried to look tenderly into dark his eyes. "I love you and you know it perfectly." I paused soon after, but I remained looking at his face. "Natan, I cannot lose you any more in my life."

"PETA, please, stop being so dramatic!" He coolly removed my hands from his long, hairy arms. But he kept staring at me as if I was just an unfamiliar person to him. "You know perfectly how to make your customers feel satisfied with your devices in bed and with so many males under your legs. I do not think you need me anymore! Not in any bed!"

He ended up pushing me back as if I had a contagious disease and could infect him easily. My back almost collided with the wall behind me and I was capable to get that Natan was not playing with me.

"Natan, I swear. I just dressed like a prostitute that night because I had to do this to try to enter the Club of Virgins again." My eyes were crystalline and full of tears and I continued explaining. "I had been expelled from there once, and certainly the guards of the club would not allow me to enter the place again after they had looked at my face and recognized who I was in fact."

Natan exhaled purposefully as he seemed tired of our conversation that had barely begun in the hallway of the university.

Some college students were looking in our direction, and they probably knew we were holding up a love affair.

"Petalouda, you do not owe me any explanation!" His head shook weakly from side to side and he kept claiming. "Then please save your unnecessary words!"

"Natan! No! No!" I tried to surround him with my own body. That was the only weapon I had against his departure at the moment. "We can try again! And I promise you that I'll never be in that club again."

My eyes full of dreams and hopes shone on his face. I still had hopes that I could persuade him.

I really hoped that Natan could say something that would make me smile, hug him, and kiss him there in front of so many people.

"No, Peta," he tried to keep his distance from me again. "I'm really tired of your false promises!" Soon, he brought his face closer to mine. At that moment, I could see the intense glow in his dark eyes. I could recognize the difference of a glare in the look full of anger. I could detect it perfectly when someone was looking at me with abhorrence. And that was a terrible thing to witness. "Saying better, I'm really tired of looking at your face and noticing that I made the biggest mess in my life after having blindly loved you." After saying that, he started to get ready to leave the hall. "Now you authorize me to move on, but without you by my side, of course."

Listening to that, I felt desperate to imagine that he was abandoning the conversation with a single, hard decision.

Everything was over between us, in fact.

"No, Natan."

I mumbled weakly at his back.

Natan pretended to stop his paces and ceased before me again.

He looked into my eyes with more intensity. Maybe he would try to make me believe in his theory of defeat.

"Yeah, Peta, we tried. We tried and tried over and over again and everything that we had after our pardons and returns was just a lot of pain and regrets." made a pause. "Really I don't want that in my life anymore."

Soon he put his chin against one of my cheeks.

I stood still.

"So, prostitute, I do not have any more tolerance for living that way." He stepped back and turned to the side, intending to walk away from me. "Goodbye, Peta."

Even paralyzed and staring at his back, I screamed strongly.

In fact I was still hopeful that I could reverse the game in the middle of us.

"Natan, we deserve a third chance!"

Even so, his footsteps kept moving forward in the corridor, in the most subtle, cold, and in no hurry to reach his destination.

Natan was just fleeing from that situation.

Saying the correct words, he was just taking refuge from my presence.

Now I was sure.

He hated me. He hated me.

"No, we do not deserve it." He said back, even without looking back at my image. "And even though we deserve it, I'm not willing to try it all over again. Not with you."

My head bowed and I stared at the clear floor of the hallway.

That unsuccessful converse seemed to be just the beginning of a nightmare that had no pretension of stopping so soon.
