Chapter 5

Killian stayed with me through the night, trying to inform me on the basics that I had to know of his world. Evmor was at an unstable situation, especially with a fresh war that had resulted in the fall of a kingdom. Killian explained that there was a lot of tension between the two remaining kingdoms, Cimerias and Leseros. There were some territories that the influences of the ruling families didn't affect it, but even these places were full of dangerous species. He explained Evmor was quite a beautiful place, full of vivid colors and fantastical creatures. But its beauty hid the treacherous side of the world. Killian warned me that many of what was there was deceptive, including something as immobile as a rock.

No matter how many times I was warned, now that I was fully resigned to the fact that I was heading to Evmor I couldn't help but feel giddy with anticipation. I had never traveled far from home, let alone a completely different world. And knowing Killian would be there to guide me through wherever I would be going, I felt safe and secure. Killian warned me against this too.

Then, doubts began to surface. What if I couldn't feel the pull of the ring? Were they sure the ring would call out to me? What if the ring was hidden in a place impossible to find? I would be stuck in an endless cycle of searching for the ring, until my death. And from what had attacked me today, I was sure there would be many other things that would try to kill me.

"No matter what happens, I promise to keep you safe." Killian promised solemnly. This eased my mind somewhat, although I couldn't completely dismiss the worry gnawing at me. But knowing he wasn't one to go back on his word, I was also extremely grateful that he would be with me. His promise concerned me a little as well; I didn't want him to do something reckless while trying to keep me safe.

With my head a whirlwind of questions and doubts, the night went by and blended into the next day.

"Morning." I greeted my family as I joined them in the kitchen. It seemed just like any other day; Nate preparing our breakfast while Emilie and I set the table. I couldn't believe that at the end of the day, I would be somewhere far, far away from here, on a quest to find some magical ring. It seemed so surreal and I couldn't puzzle out how it had all come to this.

But I knew one thing. My goal was to ensure my family's safety, find the ring, and come back successful and free to live my life. And I would do anything to reach that goal.

I devoted most of my day spending time with my family. As if it was my parting gift, Nate and Emilie both had planned to stay home today. They went about with their usual routine and I thrived to live it to the fullest. I started to notice small details that I had always dismissed before. They were things so familiar to me that I had forgotten to appreciate them. Like Nate's almost imperceptible dimple on his left cheek; how Emilie leaned back to laugh at whatever joke she found amusing; how Nate always seemed to observe both Emilie and me, as if he always felt the need to take care of us; and Emilie's habit of brushing her hair back in a conversation. I was awed at how much always by-passed me without my notice, and grudgingly thanked the turn of events that made me finally start to appreciate every little things around me.

I suggested for us to have lunch in our favorite restaurant. This earned me a few dubious looks but I explained that I had earned enough money from work to afford a nice meal, and since they were going to have plans for the evening, lunch was my only available option. We also visited the cinema to watch a movie Emilie had been dying to watch, and I let Nate pay for this to make sure my behavior wasn't too suspicious. Emilie paid for the popcorn and drinks, and we happily enjoyed these luxuries for the day.
