Luke's POV

"Remember, Luke!" my mum shouts from downstairs. "Dress night!"

I groaned, not giving her a proper reply. I rummaged through my closet, attempting to find something "appropriate" to wear.

Honestly, I just wanted to lock myself in my room and never come out. But then again, Ashton would probably find me. Like. He. Always. Manages. To. Do.

I can just imagine his reaction to seeing me tonight. 'Oh my God, Luke! I can't believe I'm inside your house, meeting your mum! We really were meant to be best friends!' And then I would try to escape the house.

I find a pair of clean, black slacks and a formal, black long-sleeved tight-fitted shirt. After getting ready and making sure I looked presentable, I went downstairs to meet with my mother.

As soon as I reached the bottom step, the doorbell rings. Dammit. Maybe my mum won't notice me trying to run upstairs so I could lock myself in my bedroom-

"Luke!" Too late. "The guests are here, could you set up the table?"

My mum wore a a floral spaghetti strapped dress and had her hair in a bun. She looked pretty and colorful, the opposite of me.

"Okay," I say and start arranging the plates and silverware along our granite top dining room table.

I hear my mum open the door and greet the guests while my heart pounds in my chest. "AnnMarie! Welcome! Are these your kids? They are so cute!"

I cringe at my mother, regretting everything immediately. My mum is so perky unlike me, so how will her coworker comprehend that I am her son?

AnnMarie replies, "Hello, Liz. You have a lovely home."

And then I heard that familiar voice that made me want to hide in a dumpster and forget all of humanity.

"Hi, Ms. Hemmings! It's great to meet you, I'm Ashton Irwin," I hear the him say. "I go to school with your son, and speaking of Luke, where is he?"

I felt like crying as my mum directed him over to the dining room. Soon enough, the overly excited boy stands in front of me, smiling from ear to ear.

"Luke!" he squeals.

I smile, a fake one of course. "Hey, Ashton."

"As soon as I recognized this as your house, I knew we were having dinner with you," he giggled. "Did you know about this?"

"Um..." I wasn't quite sure what to say rather than, 'Leave me the hell alone!'

"You probably did, didn't you!" He winked at me. "You knew all along, huh?"

"I wanted it to be a surprise," I find myself muttering.

"I certainly am surprised!" he replied. "Aw, you're the greatest friend ever, Luke!"

"Thanks..." I say. "You too."

My mum enters the dining room and smiles at us. "It's so nice that you two already know each other and are friends. You guys can go hang out in Luke's room while I prepare dinner, all right?"

I had the urge to throw all the silverware at my mum and curse her out, but instead I say, "Okay."

She really wanted this, and she really needed friends. I can't ruin this for her, so I have to put up with Ashton.

I led him all the way upstairs to my room, reckoning the biggest smile is plastered on his face. I close the door after we stepped into my room, settling down on my bed.
