When Aretha Franklin's 'Natural Woman' started playing, Grizz grabbed Riley's hand and pulled her onto the dance floor. "Slow dance with me, Fifi." He said, clearly intoxicated.
An annoyed groan escaped Riley's mouth at the sound of her childhood nickname, "fine Grizzy-Bear" she shot back, although a hint of a smile graced her face.
She felt at peace, dancing with her best friend at the prom that they never actually got to have. For those few moments, Riley rested her head on Grizz's chest, and the two swayed to the music. Everything was all right, their troubles were gone, and in that moment, they were just two high schoolers who would be graduating in two weeks and then headed off to college after summer.
However, that trance was broke after a few moments and Riley let go, a sudden wave of sadness crashing over her. "Grizz, I think I'm gonna head home." She told him, giving him a quick hug before running out, not giving him a chance to argue.
As she was leaving, Riley glanced back, and noticed that Sam and Grizz were talking, leaving her to wonder where Becca was.
. . . .
Riley had suddenly found herself in front of Becca's house. She knew that Becca was probably one of the only other teens that wasn't at the prom, or who at least had left early. The teen tried to muster up the courage to knock on Becca's door and talk, but she couldn't. A sigh escaped her as she let her hand fall, never having knocked on the door as she turned to walk down Becca's stairs and started to leave.
The sound of a door opening caught her attention, but the teen still didn't turn around as she continued to walk away.
"Riley?" It was the sound of Becca's voice, laced with sadness and trembling that had Riley turning around.
Riley noticed the look on Becca's face and saw the tear stained makeup, "are you okay?" Riley asked, immediately smacking herself mentally because Becca obviously wasn't okay, not if she was crying.
Becca shook her head no, "do you want to come in?" The teen asked, clearly not wanting to be alone.
The Italian girl nodded, and walked up the steps and to where Becca was standing, "you still look beautiful, by the way." She told Becca, a small smile on her face.
A small laugh escaped Becca as she opened the door wider so that Riley could come in.
"I have something I want to tell you, but you need to promise not to tell anyone, okay?" Becca asked Riley, a concerned look suddenly crossing her face.
Riley nodded, "yeah, of course, I'm great at keeping secrets." She told Becca as she walked in to the house, noticing how neat Becca kept the place.
"I'm pregnant."
The words hit Riley like a brick wall to the face, and they stung, but Riley knew it wasn't her place to judge or ask questions about it. "Oh, well, you're gonna be a good mom." She decided to say after a few quiet moments.
It was those words that caused more tears to fall down Becca's face, but this time they weren't sad tears, they were from relief. The two spent the night talking about all sorts of things, ranging from Becca's own family to Riley going to Sicily with her grandfather when she was younger and how she was fluent in Italian.
If only they had known what was happening a short walk across town, then maybe they wouldn't have been laughing.
