It didn't help that she was in love...

"You're not in love, Violet, you're just a hopeless romantic!"

Oops.

Violet blushed, had she been talking out loud?

Allen shot her a look of disapproval, his copper hair falling to cover his eyes.

Violet chuckled in self-deprecation- it was true.

"I suppose if anyone would know, it would be you", she sighed.

Allen had been Violet's best friend her entire life. They'd dated once- for about a week, but it was all too strange. Allen was like a brother to Violet, and he saw her the same way.

Allen chuckled, "So why aren't you talking to him, anyway?"

Violet jumped, "Wh-who Rowan?", her voice rose about ten octaves.

Allen grinned, pulling the strings of his Legends of Zelda, Twilight Princess sweatshirt hoodie tight.

"No, a sprite."

Violet thwacked him across the jaw with a pillow. "Oh, don't be sarcastic with me!" She paused, "I don't know, Al, I've liked Rowan for so long. I don't even know how I'd approach him".

Allen laughed, "Well you're 'in love' aren't you? Can't you figure it out?"

Violet blushed, "Like you'd know what to do! You've been crushing on fictional characters your whole life!"

Allen folded his arms, "Well, Arya is way cooler than Rowan".

Violet rolled her eyes, of course he was talking about fantasy characters. It was all he ever talked about. Ever since he'd read Eragon in sixth grade, he'd been the biggest fantasy nerd on the planet.

Lord of the Rings, Percy Jackson, Zelda....

Violet shuddered. Once, she'd even caught him reading Twilight.

Realizing the pestering would start soon, Violet lopped her backpack over her shoulder.

"I'd better start my homework soon," she said, making her way to the door, "See ya later!"

Allen shook his head, "Avoiding the subject won't fix your situation", he crowed.

Violet pouted, "Go hunt a gnome or something", she swooped out the door before her friend could scold her further.

Walking home Violet discovered she found her life to be terribly boring. She was a smart girl, and she'd had a pleasant childhood here in suburban Rhode Island, but she just felt so...average. She didn't take risks, and though this habit helped her sometimes, for the most part it harmed her. A Junior in high school, Violet probably should have considered herself lucky to not yet have experienced all the drama people go through. The truth was, though, she just felt so empty inside. Not in a depressed sort of way, it was more like most of her emotions had been dulled. Violet knew why. Despite her usual lack of drama, she really did feel in love. Melodrama buzzed her thoughts into chaos whenever he was around. Rowan Brown had been hovering on the edge of her mind for the whole school year.

Never mind that!  Violet cursed herself, she really did have homework to be doing.

Violet's home was small but tidy. Her town was pretty wealthy, so houses were expensive. As Violet walked down the street she noted, for the millionth time, how each little square home lined up neatly. It could not be more boring.

When she reached her own cream-colored house, she went straight to her bedroom. Both her parents had jobs- her mother was an accountant and her father a lawyer, so they weren't home much in the day. Violet didn't mind, she liked her privacy.
