Why an underground railroad?

In the early 1800s, American Abolitionists created an Underground Railroad that helped thousands of slaves escape bondage. Citizens from every type of background, referred to as conductors, helped runaway slaves with food, shelter and travel as they raced north toward freedom.

The concept of an underground railroad still exists, although today it helps women caught up in abusive situations to escape danger. The increase in human trafficking over the past several years has made the need for the railroad even more urgent.

I was working at a women’s shelter many years ago when I had a brush with this shadowy world. Early one morning, a woman, on the run from her powerful husband, made a brief stop at the shelter – gathering food and supplies for the next leg of her journey.

From that moment, I knew I had to tell the story. Blown Red represents my desire to pay homage to the courageous women and men who put themselves on the line every day to help abused women find safe haven.

I hope you enjoy a sneak peek at the first two chapters! Thanks for reading!
