When I started to wake up, I felt the soft blankets on a bed, it wasn't my bed however. it smelt kind of masculine. My head is pounding, I try to sit up but I barely make it an inch. I hear foot steps, they sound like they are coming up stairs.
"So, you're awake now" Says the voice.
I just look at him, he looks 20 but I can tell he's younger, maybe about my age or a couple years older. He has a mature face, he is tall, maybe 6'2'' or 3''. His dark black hair hangs over his face just slightly. I follow the curl of hair that leads me to his eyes. They are an ice blue, in fact I have never seen anyone with eyes that bright, they almost seem to glow in the dark.
"Hey" He says turning the light on. As soon as the lights turn on my head starts to throb like it never has before. I wince. "Oh, hold on on second" he walks back over to the light switch and dims the lights. As he does this the pain in my head subsides a little. "Is that better? I know it probably looked like you were on the sun and I can't imagine what it must have felt like"
"Yeah, thats a little better"
"Oh, how rude of me. My name is Beau bristle, and you are"
"Ruby, Ruby stronson" I say through gritted teeth, the pain in my head is starting to get unbearable. But I can't ask for more, he's already done so much. I watch him as he walks over to a cabinet and takes out what looks like a pill bottle. He takes one out and fills a glass with water.
"Ruby. I like that name, here its a pain killer" He says handing me the glass and pill. It's almost like he knew, like he heard my thoughts. "Would you like to try and sit up?"
"Yeah" I say after I swallow the pill. "What happened to that guy, the one who attacked me" I ask as he starts to help me sit up.
"He won't be bothering you anymore I promise" He says looking right in my eyes as if he's searching for something.
"How long has it been" I ask.
"You were out for a couple weeks, my best guess is that he gave you a concussion" he says brushing a stray piece of hair out of my face.
"A couple weeks?" I ask, not believing him. I look into his eyes, searching for a hint of sarcasm, there is nothing, he's telling the truth. "But where is everyone, did they come back?"
"No, ever since that day when the sky turned white most people have been gone, I don't know where"
"What do you mean gone?"
"Aside from a few small gangs and some strays, most people have just disappeared. I tried to look at the news but the cell towers are down."
"I can't believe it" I say, my head spinning. How can everyone just disappear like that?
"Hey, are you ok. You look a little faint" He says cupping the side of my face with his hand.
"Yeah, I think i'm fi-" Before I finish, the darkness drags me back down.
My head in the hand of a
Stranger.
