Nathan and I had to go to school so we walked to school saying our goodbyes to mom and dad.
I was at my locker when I overheard Gilly telling Nathan about how he stares at our next door neighbor, Karen but I ignored it and went to class.
"Hey. Aren't you Nathan Harper's sister?" A guy asked, making me turn around to see his face.
"Maybe. Maybe not. Why do you ask?" I ask, getting all curious?
"Oh. Nothing. Just wondering." he says, as he begins to walk off, leaving me dumbfounded and in confusion.
The day ends as I walk inside my home, only to meet mom and dad about to kiss in front of the sink.
"Eww! Not in front of me!" I yell as I pretend to cover my eyes in disgust.
"Haley. How was school?" Mom asked, laughing as he breaks away from dad?
"Good. But this random kid asked me if I was Nathan's younger sister. Kind of weird. Anyways, I'm going to bed." I told them, heading upstairs to sleep.

NEXT DAY AT SCHOOL
I was in gym class, sitting down on one of the benches when Nathan barges in, walking directly to Karen, who was sitting only two seats away from me with her five friends, giggling.
The whole gym class parts like the Red Sea when Nathan approaches Karen. Everyone turns silent as he looks straight at Karen.
"Must be nice to be toast of the day, but I guess that's nothing new for you. You're a popular girl, and you play the role well. Complete with the obedient cronies and the college boyfriend. But in the end, it's just a role." Nathan says, trying to calm down as he stares into Karen's eyes.
'What is he talking about?'
"You don't know anything about me," she says with a smile.
"7th grade, science class. We were lab partners. You told me you wanted to be an archaeologist. You were cool. Whatever happened to that girl? Traded it in for a pair of pom-poms?"
"I take it you can't take a joke?" she says questionably with a short laugh.
"I may have looked like an idiot falling into those bushes, but at least I know who I am."
"Really? Is that what your therapist tells you?"
Snickering can be heard, as Nathan tries to stay calm. Nathan seems to be genuinely hurt by that comment.
Nathan looks around with everyone staring at him. A profound feeling of alienation sets in.
Finally, he walks away and I follow, giving everyone the glare as I follow Nathan out the gym, leaving the room in stunned silence.

I was at my locker, next to Nathan's taking out my books as I look at him only to look kind of angry or sad.
"Are you okay, Nathan?" I ask as he takes his books out of the locker.
"I'm fine. Thanks for asking, Haley." He said with a small smile, rubbing his hand on my head.
"Are you sure you don't want me to beat up Karen for you?" I ask, playfully as he chuckles.
"I'm fine. Literally." He chuckles, wrapping an arm over my shoulder.
Just as he said that, Karen starts to make her way towards us but Nathan ignores her.
"So... Wanna be partners?" She asked as I raised an eyebrow.
'Really? After what you said to Nathan at the gym?'
"I'd rather be castrated." Nathan said, clearly not caring what she had to say.
"Look, I'm sorry, okay? I shouldn't have brought it up. It was funny, and now it's not funny."
"I'm sure this is some ploy to get me to do your homework for you." He said, finally turning to Karen but with a serious face.
"Im not vindictive. I already feel bad enough about this whole thing, as it is." She says, looking away.
"Haley and I are late for class. Let's go, Haley." he says, closing his locker as I follow him through the halls.
"Who are you going to take? Gilly? Jake? They are worse than me." she says as Nathan ignores her and continues to walk away.

Nathan and I were in his room as we play Halo on his Xbox. His cell phone rings and blindly picks up, still trying to take me out on the game as he talks.
"Hello?" He said, with his phone on his shoulder.
"I'll do the first three pages. You just do the 'specific incident' part." Karen says as her voice comes up on the other side of the phone.
"Unbelievable."
"I took the video down. Erased it entirely."
"Congratulations. You want a medal?" he says, sarcastically through the phone.
"Do we have a deal?"
"Nope."
Without hesitation, he hangs up and pays attention to the game.
"You know, you should've just said yes." I told him shrugging my shoulders as I finally take him out on the game. Nathan gives me a 'not you too' look.
Suddenly, the door bell rings. Nathan gets up and looks out the window and sees Karen at his front door.
I can see his Halo character blow up from a bomb, because of his lack of attention.
He watches as mom lets Karen inside the house.
"Holy shit. Haley, help me clean my room." He says as we both quickly grabs his clothes off the floor, and shoving them into his hamper.
He slides a bunch of stuff under his bed and glances at himself in the mirror, fixing his hair.
He turns to me which I give him a thumbs up.
Then we hear a knock as we both jump in our seats as Nathan tells the person to come in.
Karen enters the room and looks around. She sees the walls lined with books, movies, and computer software.
"You like games, huh?"
"Not the kind of games you play."
Karen shuts his door behind her and walks right up to Nathan, ignoring my presence.
"Now, you listen to me. I screwed up, okay? But I'm not going to sit back and watch you nope and groan and give me dirty looks for he rest of the summer. Maybe a lot of what you said about me were true. I don't know who I want to be just yet. But while I'm figuring that out, I'd very much like for us to be friends. And if you keep rejecting my peaceful gestures, I'll kick the ever-loving shit out of you, capiche?" She says, sternly as I just stared at her wide eyed.
Nathan slowly nods, shocked as she puts her hand out.
"Partners?"
Nathan shakes her hand.
"Good. Glad we cleared that up. Now where do we start?"
