Mary opened her eyes to bright sunlight streaming through her window. She was smiling from the pleasant dream she had had, but now she could not recall what it was. She stretched and got out of bed. Mary called to a guard in the hall to send in one of the servants to help her get ready for the day. She did not know of anything planned, so she wore a peony colored dress made of silk with white trim. She had breakfast brought to her room and after eating, went to find her friends.

The girls took a walk on the grounds, as it was a nice day outside and Mary began her tale. "So Francis and I danced yesterday-"

"We all saw you Mary, I don't think any of us needed clearing up on that part," Lola cut in sarcastically. "Tell us what happened after, we saw you leave with him."

"Well, he escorted me to my room. We talked some more about growing up here and then before he left, he kissed my cheek," Mary flushed, embarrassed.

"Really? Oh, that's wonderful!" Aylee cried.

"It was nice," Mary agreed.

"Nice?" Kenna demanded, "You're betrothed to him, you haven't seen him in ages, he kissed you, and all it is for you is nice?"

"It's complicated," she replied.

Kenna shot her a funny look and the other girls were obviously curious. Mary kicked herself for saying that; it implied there was something else going on with someone else, which there wasn't. She wished she had kept her mouth shut; now she felt inclined to tell them about Bash. Mary scanned the clearing around them suspiciously before motioning them closer. "There is something else. I saw Bash, err.. Sebastian yesterday." Mary sighed, "Well, I was exploring the castle, looking for our old playroom, and I was about to go in when he started talking to me. He had been watching me from a flight of stairs. He was so happy to see that I remembered his name, but seemed to be a bit put out about me 'changing' while I was gone."

"This doesn't sound like a complication," Kenna said.

"Well, he did escort her to the banquet," Lola put in.

"Yes, that caused some complications which may or may not have been fixed by my leaving with Francis, but that wasn't what I was talking about when I said it was complicated." Mary explained.

"Well, don't leave us hanging!" Greer exclaimed.

Mary sighed, she had told them this much already, "When Sebastian found me in the hallway and I called him by his nickname, he got really excited and he ran down the stairs. Then, he picked me up and spun me around."

"He was just happy to see you," Greer said, putting her hand on Mary's arm, "There's no need to worry about that."

"But it made me happy, Greer." Mary's face was etched with worry. Her friends knew that she wanted love, but would let the needs of her country come before her own desires.

"You were probably just happy to be reunited with an old friend," Greer began.

"And I swore to myself that I wouldn't think about him or speak to him unless it was absolutely necessary and-"

"Mary, calm down, it will be alright! You're overreacting!" Lola soothed. "Everything will be okay, this will all work out the way it ought to."

"Thank you, all of you. It means a lot to me that you all are here with me."

"God knows we wouldn't want to be anywhere else," Kenna smiled. The women then began to make their way back to the castle where they were surely missed.
