annie's pov

'katie wants to facetime you'

'yes'                                          'no'

i accept the call and immediately katie starts yelling

'I GOT KICKED OUT!'

'what?! of school?!"

'YES!'

'THAT'S WHY THE PRINCIPAL CAME AROUND LOOKING FOR YOU!'

'YEAH! THEY LEFT A VOICE MAIL ASKING FOR US TO COME TO THE SCHOOL AND WE DID AND THEY TOLD ME I WAS EXPELLED!'

i was silent for a couple of seconds and then i said, 'what are you gonna do?'

'i dont know,' she said. 'probably wait until next year and start at a new school. but my parents are pissed! they want to send me to boarding school!'

'oh...' i said.

to be fair, i knew her parents were right. they had the right to be mad and katie sorta had it coming. she was always wagging school and swearing and sending her to boarding school was probably best and it would teach her a lesson i guess.

'maybe you should talk to your parents about it. without getting mad this time.'

'i can't. they've literally grounded me in my room and i'm not allowed to leave my room except to go to the bathroom.'

'oh...'

i hear my mum calling me.

'sorry katie, i have to go have dinner. talk soon?'

'yeah. bye.'

i hang up and walk downstairs.

'what's up mum?'

'i have to talk to you and your sister.' she says.

'okay... i'll go get hayley.' i say.

i run up the stairs and into hayley's room. she's on her phone listening to music.

'hay! mum needs to talk to us.'

'what about?' she asks.

'not sure. but she seemed serious.'

'okay, i'm coming.'

we walk downstairs and see mum crying. we both rush to her side.

'what's wrong?!' we say in unison.

'your father and i are getting a divorce.'

'WHAT?!' we say, also in unison.

'we've been disagreeing a lot lately and fighting and it's been getting worse and worse and i just found out he's been cheating on me!'

'mum, that's terrible!' we say.

hayley starts to cry but i stand still, motionless.

'so, what now?' i wonder.

'i'm not sure i haven't gotten to that part yet.'

'where's dad?' hayley asks.

'i don't know, he just stormed off.' mum says. 'i need to make dinner.'

'okay,' we say, and we walk upstairs in silence. we don't say a word, we just walk into our rooms.
