Violet Baudelaire wakes up to the smell of pancakes one morning. But also her alarm which is the most annoying sound in the universe. She gets ready for her first day of 8th grade. Violet made sure that she woke up an hour earlier. Good morning Violet" her mom says. "Good morning mother" Violet replies. She sees that Klaus and Sunny are already eating at the table. "Ready for school?" her mom asks. "I guess.." Violet answers. "Come on! you woke up extra early, that seems pretty ready to me" Klaus tells her. "Whatever" Violet responds. "New neighbors!" Sunny speaks. "What?" Klaus asks. "We have new neighbors" their mom finishes. Violet and Klaus look out the window. Every time they get a new neighbor Violet remembers their first one. A boy her age with straight black hair. His name was Five. Everyone at school made fun of him because of his name. He lived with strict parents and a brother named Luther. I never talked to his brother or his parents, just to him. We played all day outside. My mom used to bring chalk so we could both draw in the sidewalk when we were very little. After that we rode our bikes around the street together. But he had to move out one day. I had no one to talk to outside of school until the beginning of middle school. I met my best friend Isadora. She's a very smart person and I'm glad to have her as a friend although I think Klaus might have a crush on her. Ew. I wonder what neighbor we're having. Hopefully not a loud one or an annoying one. I see 4 people get out of a black car. Violet spots sunny opening the door knob and leaving out the door running. "Sunny!!" Violet adds going after her. "Sunny come back h-" Violet bumps into someone and falls on the grass. "Ouch" she says. "Are you okay? I'm so sorry!" a boy tells her. He holds out his hand for her to get up. Violet is looking down because it's less embarrassing. She takes his hand and gets up. Violet looks up at him. Is that- NO it can't be she thinks. "Hey.." the boy speaks. "Hi.." Violet answers. "I need to um- get my sister" she finishes. Violet sees Sunny talking to a woman. Violet walks towards them. "She is just so adorable!" The woman says. The lady gasps. "You guys must be our neighbors" she adds. "Yup.. come on Sunny" Violet tells her. She carries Sunny and starts to head towards the house. Klaus was watching from the window. "Are you guys okay?" He asks when they get in. "We're fine" "Sunny don't ever do that again do you understand me?!" Violet says. "Yes.." Sunny replies. "Let's go upstairs and play with your toys" her mom tells Sunny. They both make their way upstairs. "Violet?" Klaus asks. "Yeah?" Violet responds. "That boy looks so familiar" he adds. "I know" Violet replies. It was time for school and Violet was at her locker getting her books for first period. "Hey V!" Isadora walks up to her. "Hey" Violet says. "I can't believe it's our first day of 8th grade!" Isadora adds. "I know right? Who knew the first day of school was so exciting" Violet answers. "Better get to class" Isadora grabs Violet's hand and they walk into math. They sit down next to each other. "Today we have a new student" the teacher tells the class. "I love when we get a new student" Isadora whispers to Violet. "We always have the same people in our classes" she continues. The boy from earlier walks in. "Please welcome Mr. Five Hargreeves" Ms. Herrera says. It is him. "Like the number?" a boy laughs. God! I've always wanted to slap that kid. He's the worst classmate ever! One time I was his partner for a project and he made me do all the work. "Jacob please" Ms. Herrera says. "Maybe five represents the number of people he's killed or the number of girls who rejected him" Jacob continues. "How about you shut your mouth so nobody comes out of the classroom with a bloody ear" Five replies. The classroom fills with silence. Did he just- wow. "Everyone, get to your seats.." Ms.Herrera finishes. Even she was shocked. I don't remember Five being like this. I mean..I kinda like it.. WHAT?! What am I saying. It was lunch time. Violet and Isadora were at a table. "How's Klaus?" Isadora asks. "He's good but why are you asking?" Violet replies. "I'm just curious" she tells her. Violet rolls her eyes. Five gets in line for food. He accidentally cuts in front of a girl. "Hey! Back of the line new kid" the girl says. Five looks at her. She has curly red hair. "I'm good" he answers. The girl smiles. "You can go behind me" she responds. He does. "I'm Max by the way" the girl adds. "I'm Five" Five says. "Cool! Like the number?" Max replies. "What other Five is there?" he answers. "Come on, you can sit with me" she says. He follows her to a table. "So, where'd you come from?" Max asks. "I actually just came from Mars" Five jokes. "That sounds amazing" she laughs. He does too. Violet looks around the cafeteria to see if she spots Five. She sees that Five is laughing with Max. Violet looks at her and then him. "We've got a stalker" Max tells Five while looking at Violet. He turns to her and smiles. Violet smiles back. "She's my neighbor actually" Five adds. "Really?" Max says. "I haven't gotten to learn her name yet but she seems so familiar" he finishes.
