James was woken up by screaming. The screaming of Colonel Miller to be exakt.

What he was screaming was unclear beetween the sounds of hundrets of Machine Guns, Rifles and Artillerie firing at the nearly same time. But before James could ask, the Colonel was Hit by something In the shoulder.
James was certanly awake by now and was ready to join the ongoing Battle he reached for his rifle and...

It was gone.
That was actually a pretty normal thing, because so many Men joined the Army for the War in such a short time, That there simply weren't enough Rifles for all soldiers at the Start of the War

You would die, or go to sleep

But that Rifle wasn't handed James by the Army,

This Rifle wasn't an ordinary Rifle, at least not for him.

That specific Rifle was made by his soon to be Father in Law, and had the names of him and his Girlfriend engraved in the Stock.

A Gift, the First nice thing he ever did for James,
And he handed him the weapon with the nicest words that this man ever sad to James

And now this special rifle was gone.

James looked arround him and saw an ordinary SMLE lying on the ground, "that'll do for now" he thought and stood up, Grabbed the Gun and went to the firing step.

As he stood there, he looked right into the eyes of death, in this case a grenade, wich was Thrown by a German soldier who was just about 20 Meters away in the german trench.

James' entire life passen before his inner eye a second before the grenade detonated and Not Only killed James, But also three other soldiers who stood there, Just like James.
