I woke up to the sun peeking through the scarlet curtains and the birds outside singing their morning songs. I groan, turning to the side and looking at the clock next to my bed. 6:42. One hour until classes. Sitting up, I rub my eyes and flatten out my hair, wiping away all remnants of my wonderfully deep sleep. As I swing my legs over the edge of my bed, the sudden exposure to the cold air, makes me shiver a little.
"Morning, sleepy-head." Hermione says, standing in front of a full-length mirror, combing through her hair. I look at her, and then at the two other girls in the room. Both of them were still clothed in their pyjamas, unlike Hermione, and were staring at me curiously.
"Morning Olivia." a blonde girl says, in a happy voice. I don't question how she knows my name - I doubt there's very many new kids at Hogwarts. "I'm Lavender Brown." she flashes me a glimpse of some pearly white teeth, before flipping open the lid of her trunk and rummaging through.
"Hey." I reply and I turn to the other girl. She has dark features, big bright eyes and was still sat in her own bed, evidently just woken like myself.
"I'm Parvati Patil." She says, grinning through a wide yawn.
"Well, it's nice to meet you" I say, smiling. "I'm just going to have a shower."
The bathroom tiles are cold against my feet and the mirrors are fogged and dripping. I enter one of the shower cubicles and strip naked. My clothes are dumped onto a dry patch on the floor. The faucet is switched on and greets me with immediate warm water pouring out of it, giving me goosebumps. I let the water trail over my body and fall to the floor.
I scrub my hair with shampoo and conditioner and eventually step out of the shower, wrapping a towel around me and dabbing my skin dry. I pick up my robes and change into them, quickly, making sure my tie is perfect and my skirt is rolled. I use the red hair towel that was hung up and use it to rub my hair dry until it hung in loose curls at my shoulders. I step back out into the dorm, holding my dirty pyjamas, the other girls are still getting ready and chatting away, not noticing I came in until I close my wooden trunk with a bang. They turn around.
"I love your hair!" Lavender squeals standing up and hurrying over to me. She strokes my still-damp hair, twirling a cruel around her finger.
"Oh, er- thank you!" I say, looking down and tucking the stray pieces behind my ear.
"It's so nice!" She says, "The colour really makes your eyes pop!"
"Thanks, yours is gorgeous too," I say, smiling awkwardly, as I begin straightening out the quilt on my bed and fluffing up the pillows to make it look neater.
"You ready Hermione?" I say, turning on my heels and grabbing my school bag, which was hanging up on the corner of my bed.
"Yes, just coming!" Hermione says, brushing her hair one last bit and also swinging her bag over her shoulder before joining me to breakfast. The Great Hall is filled with students, chatting amongst their friends, before classes were due to start. We walk over to Harry and Ron who were already down here, eating their way through a large plate of bacon and scrambled eggs each. We sit down next to them and I look at Harry, smiling.
It wasn't a dream. He's actually here. My brother. Who I haven't seen in thirteen years. Who I don't have so much as one memory with. Here.
"Morning, girls. Sleep well?" Harry says, scooping more eggs into his mouth. We both nod, beginning to fill our own plates.
"Classes start today," Hermione says, eagerly. "I wonder what we have today?"
"Oh yeah," Ron says with a mouthful of food "We got given these" he hands Hermione and I a piece of parchment, our timetable. I look down at the grid on the parchment, admiring all the foreign class names.
