It became a routine of ours. Once a week we'd meet on the roof and talk, normally on the weekends. Sometimes I'd bring the dinner that I made. Sometimes he brought fastfood. Other times, if we booth weren't hungry, I'd share my stash of deserts-which I only did for a select few( Ciarra and Michael).
The only problem was we had to have our backs towards each other because his helmet was off.
" So let me get this straight." I took another sip of my chocolate milkshake. " You tried to steal Batman's wheels?!"
" Yep!" he took another bite of his hamburger." And he got me some food, adopted me and made me a Robin."
" Yeah but stealing from Batman? The dark night. The most feared superhero. I don't know if thats stupid or just sad."
" Excuse me. But didn't you try to fight seven gang members with a stick?" he retorted.
" It was a wooden board, and I had a taser for your information."
" Oh my goodness! A taser?! I'm sure they nearly pissed themselves!"
" Oh shut up! It was a birthday present and I woulda tased 'em all where it hurts." He laughed in response. He was starting to do that more often; I liked it.
" Who knew you could be so brutal, Ally Cat?" he said most likely smirking.
" I had to avenge my doughnuts." I deadpanned.
He snorted. " How noble of you."
We settled into a silence that has become comfortable overtime as we finished our food. This was actually what I looked forward to in having a soulmate. No need for fancy outings or extravagant gifts, just us enjoying each other's company. Having good food didn't hurt either.
" Hey Ally . . ."
Uh oh. He left out the " Cat" in his nickname for me. This must be serious.
" Yeah?"
" I don't mind if you see my face."
I nearly choked on a fry. I'll admit that me not knowing what he looked like seemed strange. Heck, I've even been calling him Red this whole time. I just wanted to make him feel comfortable. It must have worked since he started letting me lean on his back as we ate.
" But aren't you worried about me knowing who you are yet?"
I could feel him shift nervously on the blanket beneath us.
" Well, we've been doing this for almost three months now and you don't even know my name. . .I just. . ." he sighed. " I just don't want this to be one-sided. You've been so trusting of me and I should show you that I trust you, too."
I felt a flutter in my chest. From what little I know about Red, he didn't trust people easily.
" Ok then. If you really don't mind. I don't want you to feel pressured."
" I know. That's why I don't mind." he then chuckled due to my nervousness or maybe his own.
" How about you turn around first then tell me when to?" I suggested.
" Fine by me." the sound of him moving against the blanket was muffled by my heart thumping in my ears. " Your turn."
I took a deep breath, slowly turned around and felt what would've been my exhale get caught in my throat. I tried to imagine what he'd look like, but Jesus Christ was I way off! Short, silky, black hair. Intense blue eyes. Sharp, rugged features....
The universe is testing me. This CAN'T be right!
" So . . . what do you think?" he asked but my mind raged on.
I call shenanigans. Something's wrong. There's been a mistake. My soulmate could never look THIS good. They'd be delightfully average at best. Not that I'd care. I'd love them anyway. BUT THIS! What-who made this man?!! And who decided to make him my one and possibly only soulmate?!!!
" Ally? . . . Ally! Are you there?!"
I came back to the present.
" Huh!? Sorry what did you say?"
" I asked what'd you think?"
My face went hot and my hands started to sweat.
Crap! What do I say? When was the last time I flirted? Have I ever flirted? Come on just think of something!!!
" U-uh you're. . . you look. . you have ketchup on your mouth."
You had one job. And you blew it. You. Had. One. Job!!!
" Oh, really I thought I wiped it off earlier."
" Yeah, here." I handed him a napkin.
" Thanks." he wiped it off." But you still didn't answer my question." he made direct eye contact. Like my heart could handle more tormenting.
Dang it this was so much easier when I couldn't see him.
" Why do I have to? You know what you look like." I laughed nervously and stared down at the last of my fries. When I looked back, he was mere inches away from my face. " W-what?"
He smirked and quirked an eyebrow.
" Did you know that you can blush?"
" I - no I don't!"
He laughed and laid onto the blanket with a sigh, hands behind his head." Whatever you say, Ally Cat."
I laid down next to him and ate the rest of my now cold fries. I gave him a few as well.
" My name's Jason Todd by the way."
" Cool name and . . ."
" And?" he turned his head to me, eyes meeting mine, smiling.
I'm not gonna get use to that am I?
" And you're pretty nice to look at."
Ok that's a start. Progress.
He smirked pridefully.
" I know." then he grinned.
A look flashed in his eyes that I couldn't decipher.
" You are too."
