The entire summer whisked by much faster than Irisadonna had expected it to.
Belladora had kept her end of the deal to hook her up with Leo and they'd been dating for the majority of the summer. She really, really liked Leo and was absolutely delighted to find out that he would be going to her school this term.
It was bright and early on the 7th of September, the first day of school when Irisadonna emerged from the broody, dark cave she called her room. Well, it wasn't so broody and dark as it was pink and girly, just how Irisadonna liked things but anything looks broody at 7 am.
She'd woken up late and had had to utilise some serious Flash skills to be able to make it out of the door in time for school that began at eight sharp."Rissie, babes! Over here!" Deborah called Irisadonna over from where she stood by the statue of the Virgin Mary by the school's entrance.
She laughed as Irisadonna hurriedly scampered up the steps to join her before doubling over, trying to catch her breath. "How did you get here so quickly? It was like," Deborah checked her phone, "six fifty when you texted me saying you'd just woken up."
Irisadonna straightened herself out and grinned playfully. "A magician never tells her secrets."
Deborah rolled her eyes and picked up her friend's bag from the ground where she'd dropped it in her hurry. "You're not even that late, you know."
"A prefect needs to be punctual," Irisadonna said, still panting lightly.
Deborah sucked her teeth and readjusted her glasses. "Let's get inside."
The hallway was full of bustling students and their loud chatter. Several people asked their friends how their summers were at the same time and numerous people simultaneously answered that it had been alright, though boring. There were fresh first formers standing stationary in the middle of the walkway, trying to fix their lipgloss in the reflection of their selfie cameras, fifth form girls actually taking selfies, the rowdy basketball boys congregating together and slapping each other on the backs in greeting and the long-legged girls' track team silently asserting their superiority and bragging about how little sleep they'd gotten over the summer because of their time spent training instead.
"So how was your trip to Barbados?" Irisadonna asked Deborah. Her friend crossed her arms over her large chest and exhaled in annoyance.
"They basically tricked me into going," she huffed. "Do you remember how much I wanted to stay here with you guys because I didn't want to work in my grandparents' shop all summer this year?"
Irisadonna nodded. "Yeah, I remember. You made it pretty known how much you hated that they never really bothered to pay you."
"Exactly. And it isn't even like they have to pay for my food and board. My parents send money," Deborah complained.
"Off topic, Debby."
"Oh yeah, right. Could you take your bag?" Deborah asked.
"Of course," Irisadonna replied as she slipped her bag off of her friend's shoulder and unto her own. "Now on with the story."
Deborah looked lost for a moment and Irisadonna rolled her eyes. "How did they trick you?"
"Oh yeah," Deborah smiled. "They convinced me to go by saying that I could stay with my Uncle Henry. Next thing I know, I'm working on a farm for even less pay."
"What do you mean?" Her friend asked as they walked.
"I mean that I didn't even have my grandma's rum cake as consolation," she pouted. "I did have my cousin's best friend as consolation though," she smirked. "He might have been even sweeter than cake."
