Chapter Fifty-One

The Wedding

Myrna worked on the hairdos for the woman as each one dressed in their finest undergarments. Geneva brought her dress into Talia's room and handed her a wrapped package.

"What is this?" asked Talia.

"Every bride should have something old and something new, something borrowed and something blue," said her mother. "I knew your Grandmother Huntley's topaz ring is old and your dress is new. I am not sure about the something borrowed, but I have something blue for you to wear."

Talia unwrapped a beautiful ice blue corset. It was trimmed in ivory lace and ribbon ties. Talia blushed as she looked at the undergarments that matched.

"It is beautiful," said Talia.

She removed her nightgown and put on the satin chemise and bloomers. Her mother helped her into the corset. It gave Talia a beautiful silhouette of her figure.

She added her stockings and a petticoat; then she slipped on her ivory and gold wedding dress. As the woman stepped back to admire the design and Talia's beauty in the dress, there was a knock on the door.

Rose Thanturnam entered wearing a beautiful, full red satin gown.

"Oh, Talia, you look absolutely breathtaking," said Rose.

She immediately recognized the ivory brocade in her dress as the same as Roman's vest.

"Turn around so I can see the whole design," said Rose.

Talia slowly turned around, showing the slightly longer train of the gown in the back. The neckline exposed her cleavage as the topaz necklace laid between her breasts.

Myrna had placed the crown of laurel braided with ivory ribbons that hung down the back. The topaz earring hung delicately from her ears, and the toes of her ivory shoes peaked out from the hem of her dress.

The copper and red satin rose bouquet added the finishing touches to her ensemble. Then Myrna handed Talia her lacy handkerchief.

"Please borrow my lace handkerchief that I carried at my wedding to bring you good luck in your marriage," said Myrna.

"Thank you," said Talia as she hugged her friend.

Rose went through the details of the ceremony and told Talia to stay out of sight of Roman until she and her father came down the staircase. When Rose left, the women finished their last-minute preparations.

Myrna looked lovely in her plaid and red satin dress, and her mother looked stunning in the dark green satin gown. Her white hair shone with softness as she carried herself about the room.

Agnes stole the show in her new gown. The corset gave her a womanly figure with her bosoms exposed. Her hair was re-pinned by Myrna, and Agnes insisted on wearing her shined black boots for dancing.

"Agnes, you look beautiful," said Talia.

"Oh, go on," said Agnes. "Where is my handkerchief? I just know I am going to cry."

Myrna and Agnes then left the room to go downstairs to find their men and get a pleasant spot in the foyer to admire all the beautiful gowns. Neither one had ever attended an evening ball where young ladies were announced. They both excited for the evening's festivities.

It completely took Calvin back at the sight of Agnes in her evening gown. He couldn't take his eyes from her as she sauntered down the staircase.

He stepped forward to meet her at the foot of the stairs.
