Lately my family has been going through some tough times and I've been trying to help whenever I can but being a sixth form student with exams approaching I've been more of a burden on them than a help.
For the past few months, I've been stressed out from school, family, maintaining friendships and financial situations. This by far has been the roughest year of my life yet and I thought it couldn't get any worse until that dreadful morning my mom came to wake me up.
_______________________________________"Beep! Beep!"
I woke up to the sound of my annoying alarm but there was a smile plastered on my face nevertheless. Exams was finally finished!
Although my exams are done, the stress doesn't end there unfortunately. It was time for me to find a job this vacation as I knew my parents weren't financially stable for a long time now but they didn't want to frustrate me with their problems.
As I was scrolling through Instagram, there was a knock on my door.
"Come in!" I shouted.
"Honey, there's someone we would like you to meet," my mother said nervously while avoiding eye contact.
"Who is it mom?" I asked beginning to get scared by her tone.
"It's your buyer. He's here to collect you," she said.
"What do you mean mom?" I questioned with a frown deepening on my face by the moment.
"Come here," she called me as she sat on my bed and opened her arms for a hug.
"As you probably have guessed already, your father and I haven't been in the best place financially for the past few years," she told me while caressing my hair.
"In short, your father has made a bad deal and now he has to settle his debt by selling you to the mafia," my mom whispered as tears streamed down her face.
She hugged me tighter as she kept on repeating, "I'm sorry baby. I'm really really sorry but your father doesn't have a choice."
I sat there enjoying the comfort of my mother's hugs which may as well be the last time I'm receiving it. These few moments felt like it was hours in her arms but it was short lived because of what happened a few seconds later.

"Bang!"
My mother and I looked up in sudden shock to see that my door was broken down and two men in black attire walked in and demanded that I come with them.
I held onto my mother even tighter as tears were cascading down my face as if a dam had just burst. "Mom, please don't let them take me," I pleaded.
Before my mother could even say anything, they snatched me out of her arms and dragged me away. From the distance I could hear my mother's cries. The sound of her cries broke my heart.
As I looked around with blurry eyes due to unshed tears, my father was no where to be seen. At the end of the day, this was his fault so I'm guessing he doesn't want to be around when it's all going down.
I fought the man holding onto me, trying to get him to loosen his grip so I could make a run but it was of no use as he was built like a rock. Everything I did was useless. I was useless. Only if I was able to get a job earlier, maybe, just maybe I would've been able to help them settle this debt without all this unnecessary drama.
I gave up on trying to escape as I started to accept that this is what my life has come to. The men shoved me into the backseat of a black Range Rover and blindfolded me. I didn't even bother to struggle because what even is the point of it?
The last thought that ran through my mind as we drove off was that I hope my mother takes care of herself. I hope she doesn't worry about me much and blame this on herself because it wasn't her fault. It was my father's fault. That selfish bastard!
