Thomas never imagined that the long voyage would be as eventful and full of danger as he thought it would be. It had more dangers then he ever dreamed about. He thought about all of this as he got ready for bed that night and laid down.
Despite now being safe after the captain, John Smith, had rescued him from drowning,
Thomas was still afraid of what was to come. Would savages come and attack them the first day they got to the New World? Would there be another storm? Thomas lay awake thinking until, finally, he fell asleep.
Later, he found himself in another storm as he had feared.
As he worked to get the cannons retied, he looked behind himself and saw....Governor Ratcliffe! With a cat o' nine whip! There was an evil look in his eye as he raised it over his head. The whip came down on the boy and knocked him helplessly overboard. Thomas screamed as he fell helplessly into a seemingly bottomless pit.
John Smith, having finished his night checks on the crew to make sure everyone was safe in bed, was about to turn in when he heard a piercing scream split the silence,
"Thomas?" He ran back to the cabin Thomas was in and found the boy asleep, but tossing and turning, sweating, and crying, "Help! Help!" John looked sorrowfully at his little friend. Carefully lifting Thomas' head, he cradled the youth's upper body in his arms and wiped his eyes, "Thomas, it's alright, I'm right here." John ran his fingers through the boy's dark red hair as Thomas slowly started to settle down.
In his dream, Thomas was aware of an echoing voice as he fell, "Thomas, it's alright, I'm right here." Slowly, he awoke from the dream as his teary eyes focused on John's compassionate smile.
John sat the boy up and brought him carefully to his chest. Thomas buried his face and sobbed. John gently stroked the boy's back and shushed him. Thomas never felt more comforted than this as John held him close and rocked him back to sleep.
