CHAPTER XIV

Phire tried to make her steps faster as much as possible. Her once little steps are now doubled in an effort to catch up with him. “Where are we going?” He won’t speak. He just clutched his hand on her and grabbed it through the hallways. They have been like that for almost ten minutes, but he just remained silent. There’s an unexplained gauche boundary between the two. “Have you gone mute?” This time his grip felt stronger.

Phire tried to pull her hand out, but he won’t let go. He just continued walking like he heard nothing. “Freya...” Without much more thinking, she reluctantly wrapped her arms around him. Her hands were crossed over his chest with her face buried on his back. This way she knows he would be mortified and will instantly stop.

Right away, he did and unexpectedly took her right hand that was placed over his chest and damped it on his cheek. Weirdly, she thought that was creepy.

“Who did that to you?” Freya turned around and gave a stern expression. She had never noticed before, but Freya is actually taller than her. She had always thought that she is.

“Oh... this?” she shoved away the bits of eggshells stuck on her skirt. “Oh somebody who got baseball bat issues” she boringly said. “I thought you’re not going to school----- yet”

“Who told you that?”

“Imelda and-------- mother” Calling Victoria her mother, had always felt eccentric. On the contrary, feels delightful. It’s like she’s just any other kid with a mom and a dad. She used to see her classmates being picked up by their moms. However, it had always been different for her. Her dad was always on work because he had to work for their food. So, she always had to go home all by herself. There were even times the poor girl had to run through the rain watching those kids being sheltered by their parents, under their wide colorful umbrellas, safe and sound. How she longed for that feeling.   Being secured, being protected. Knowing that tomorrow you can wake up with someone holding your hand, shielding you from the darkness, saying she’ll never leave you alone. Those were the days Lauren wasn’t still a part of her life. But then, Phire is already too old for those things. Right now, she has a dad with a stable job and a mom who’d never leave her dad. That’s the only thing she’s presently assured of. “Mom told me”

“Mom?” Freya snatched her I.D. And there he saw her full name. “Sapphire Mariaè Demmiforah Beaufort Everett----------------------- She actually did” Vacantly, he dropped the I.D on the floor and took her hand once again. “We’re going home”

Regardless of the explanations Phire had made, Imelda can’t be calmed down. The old nanny can’t take to see her lass soaked in such filth. She’s a Beaufort now; she shouldn’t be mistreated by anyone else. If Victoria finds this, she’ll be surely dismayed. “What on eart’ have that bitch done to ya’?” Her emotions were poured down on rubbing the girl’s head.

“Ouch------- I told you-- just some freak

All of the maids were staggered when they saw Phire and Freya go home at the middle of the day. Phire was soaking wet with bits of eggshells over the body. “Then, who that freakin’ lady is?” Imelda cannot take off his guard on Freya. He’s on the other corner of the room watching them. For some unexplainable reasons, she’s utterly nervous. “Ya should avoid her” Conversely, she must also be thankful that the cold lad had taken the girl home, or else she won’t know anything of what happened. Her young mistress shouldn’t be bullied. Well, she won’t get mistreated as long as she wears the name Beaufort. And only if Freya is with her, they would treat her with greater benevolence. Needless to say, the kid has an enigmatic charisma. He’s one of the greatest influences that school has. If Freya could only stay by her side, she will not be harmed. Although, she feels a very creepy uncertainty every time she hears Freya talking about Phire.
