One of Naruto's biggest regrets when training with Jiraiya was that he never said goodbye.
He couldn't figure out how. Day after day of meeting with you for breakfast and he just couldn't get the words out to explain that he wouldn't be able to come around anymore, not for a long long time.
Now that he left, every time he thought of you (and it was often, your cooking was amazing and Naruto craved it all the time) he was overcome with this deep throat clenching regret. What if you were gone by the time he got back?
You unknowingly kept him company every night he slept out under the stars. And every morning as he wondered what you were cooking up good for breakfast for all you other loyal customers. Did your dad still consider him his favourite? What if someone else was taking up his space at your counter...?

"Eh, Shikamaru"

Naruto was waving his hands around in a last ditch effort to get the attention of his assistant, who was leaning against the wall of the Hokage office with a book in his face. It took him three tries to finally get him to snap out of this trance.
"It's like you've been in an entirely different world. Just what are you reading anyway?"
Shikamaru blinked. "ASL For Beginners"
