"That'll be £9.50, please" Even though Alexander, Y/N's newest date, could have paid the cashier with the £10 notes that were clearly sticking out of his wallet, he pulled a £50 note out to give to the woman behind the counter instead. She was obviously taken aback by the money, for she stopped to stare at the guy for a few seconds before clearing her throat. "I hope you don't mind, but I'm going to have to get my manager to come over and check that I can take that." He curtly nodded, displeasure evident on his face that he would have to wait to see a manager yet there was a hint of smirk too.

"Fine, but can we make it quick? I'd rather not be stood here waiting forever." Y/N mouthed a soft apology to the cashier, bringing her purse out of her bag to grab a £10 note to hand over, already feeling embarrassed by the situation.

"Here, use this instead. I'm sorry for the inconvenience." She didn't even have a chance to hand the money over before Alexander shoved her hand away, scoffing loudly and eyeing her. She was speechless to say the least, never had she been treated that way by a guy on a date. There was so much malice in his eyes that she retracted her hand and put the money back in her purse silently.

From the moment she had turned up at the date, she'd had a bad feeling about him. The way he shook her hand instead of offering her a hug left her a little on edge but she liked to give everyone the benefit of the doubt. When he waved at a guy near the bar and nodded as though he knew him, Y/N felt somewhat uncomfortable, not sure where the night was headed. The money situation left her gulping and wishing that she was anywhere else.

"Of course, I'll be as quick as I can be." The woman rushed off to find her manager, nodding in acknowledgement when Y/N gave her yet another sympathetic smile.

While they waited for the cashier and manager, Alexander held his head high, an uppity looking smirk on his face. He kept shaking his shoulders, something that left Y/N rolling her eyes at him in annoyance as not two minutes before he was getting shirty at the thought of having to wait.

She didn't want to be there anymore, and the date hadn't even begun properly. The only thing she wanted was to have not agreed to meet him. She could have been at home, in her comfy clothes on the sofa with a bowl of popcorn and her favourite film instead. Nothing could beat that on a Saturday night.

The cashier returned only moments later, the manager behind her with a lovely smile that made Y/N feel truly guilty for wasting their time. Alexander moved from one leg to the other, letting out a prolonged exhale and eyeing the manager who looked him up and down quickly.

"Sorry about this," the manager took the money from Alexander and analysed it in great detail, "we don't get many £50 notes in anymore so when we do we have to make sure that they aren't fake."

Y/N could feel her date tense from beside her, growing agitated the longer he had to wait. Though he clearly enjoyed the fuss around him or he'd have paid with a smaller note like any other person would have. It wasn't like he didn't have any with him, he had lots.

"Do I look like I need to fake a £50 note?" The air was starting to grow thick around the four people, a small queue building behind them. "Like, tell me... do I look poor to you? Didn't think so!"

Y/N had never been more embarrassed in her life, having to excuse herself to nip to the toilet before they started to bowl just so she could have some time to breathe. She didn't need a wee but she stood in front of the mirror and told herself to leave the date. She didn't leave though, she would feel too guilty if she had so she left the bathroom and hyped herself up to continue the date. When she got back to the bar area across from where they were paying, she found Alexander ordering himself a drink. Her initial plan hadn't been to drink during the date, what with her at work the following morning, but she found herself needing the alcohol.
