Winter's POV

From a small door in the shadows behind the thrones approached a small, scrawny man. My brother snorted and rolled his eyes upon seeing him. The man glared at my brother but stood tall, clutching a notepad to his chest. He was dressed in an expensive-looking black suit and tie and large, square glasses were perched upon his long nose. His black hair was slicked to the side and I admit he would have been good-looking if it weren't for the scowl that marred his face.

"Victor." My brother said harshly, narrowing his eyes at the queen's advisor.

Victor looked him up and down like he was a particularly smelly gym sock.

"Hmm. Yes, it's the dirty orphans." Victor drawled in his English accent before studying his notes. What he said startled me, sure, many people assumed we were orphans and a few even knew we were, but no one had ever brought it up.

The story of our parents was tragic and quite hard to forget even though my brother and I were only five when it happened. Images of coarse black fur and gleaming white fangs would still occasionally haunt my dreams. However, no one believed us when we had first explained how it had happened, the idea was too impossible. There were even times when I doubted the truth, but then the dreams came back and I knew.

"Where was the Leader patrolling?" Hamish asked Victor, "We need to go-"

"No," Victor cut across, "Your orders are to stay here and protect the civilians." He looked bored as he took out a pen and began writing notes.

"What?" Hamish voiced my thoughts, protecting the civilians was the least of our worries, the fight was out by the border, not in the village!

"Yes. Now, do you have anything to declare or do you just wish to waste my time?"

"I declare that this is stupid." Hamish murmured. Victor glared at him before backing out of the throne room through the hidden door.

"Ugh!" Hamish fumed, kicking the stone floor. "This is ridiculous! Why are we always in charge of watching over the civilians?"

I sighed, there was no disobeying the advisor's orders, no matter how big of a prat he happened to be.
