Ryder's POV

'Anything?' My muscles were tense, I couldn't breathe and yet I couldn't stop panting all at the same time. My heart was racing and yet it was perfectly still, waiting, like a trout before it whisks away down the stream. My stomach was in my throat and yet it was sunk deep down like an anchor at the deepest depths of the ocean. I paced around my study, toppling stacks of paper and a podium without noticing. If she was a human, that would be fine, perfect even, I could deal with that, yes. A wolf however, may be trickier, she would have heard rumors about me, I doubt females would find who I am too appealing. No, can't be a wolf then, but if she was, she would feel the pull as well, she would not be able to refuse it, she would have no choice but to accept me! Or maybe I could change, could I change? Maybe.

'Alpha sir.' It was my Beta.

"Yes! What is your news?" I blurted before realizing I had said this much too fast to be decent and I hadn't even used the mind-link. 'Report' I amended with more dignity.

'Not a wolf sir.'

Not a wolf? Good! This shall be easier then! A human, my mate is a hu-

'But sir...' Lazarus sounded uncertain, nervous.

'Yes?' I prompted.

'I don't believe she is a human either...'

What? Not human? But they have checked the police database... They couldn't have missed anything could they?

'Are you positive that you haven't missed anything?'

'Yes, sir' He said hesitantly. I was not at all reassured.

'Well check again!' I demanded, temper rising.

'Yes, sir' He replied exasperatedly.

Not human? Then what is she? What else is there? Nothing, there is nothing else! It is only the fault of my Beta, yes, I will be sure to punish him for causing me such worry!

''Ey boss we got-a runna!' Crane's voice burst into my mind, filled with glee.

A runna? Oh, yes, an escapee. That is not of import now! Why would he dare bother me with this?

'Yes, yes, do with it what you please!'

'S'that so boss?'

'Yes! Yes! Now leave me be!'

'Good that, boss! Will do! And don't ya fret! I'll do a spiffing job this time, just splendid!'

'Lilith, watch Crane.' I tell her.

'Of course, my liege.' She drawled in return.
