The baby is born five months later at Wichita General. His mother names him for his father, or at least, his biological one. In truth, the child has three fathers. One of them, of course, is remembered in his name: Eddie. He is born light but strong, sturdy, and his hands are already those of a farmer, a reminder of Jim.
But it is his eyes, to the absolute horror of his mother, that are not at all his own. They belong to his last father, the dark figure, the straw man, not the one to sire him, but an influence on his life all the same. Penny had hoped against all hope, prayed for days on end, that she had left the farm fields of Beauty behind for good when she moved to Wichita, but it is not so.
For the baby's eyes are alight with fire, and they burn as brightly as a harvest moon.
