Beautiful Paroxysm

Chapter#05

The door loudly shut outside. She raised her head and frowned. Was Nessie drunk again? 

She raised herself from her laying position and walked outside. She paused when she saw it wasn't her sister but James, Nessie's boyfriend. Without letting him aware that she had seen him, she creeped back to her room and softly closed the door behind immediately locking it. The cold sweat on her hand was sending shivers down her spine.

Did Nessie gave him the keys? 

She quickly grabbed her cellphone and called Jacob who picked it up on first ring.

"Yo. How come you are awake at this hour?" Jacob cheerful question made her look at the blue clock hanging on the wall. It was around 1 at night which was usually the time where she was dead to the world but she hadn't realized how late it got while she was studying. 

"Jacob, James is in the apartment." She whispered as softly as she could manage. The shake in her voice wasn’t unheard by Jacob.

She heard silence on the other side for few second before the sound of shuffling reached her ear as Jacob demanded, "Where the fuck is Nessie? And how did he get in?"

"I don't know. Nessie probably gave him the key. Will you come to pick me up in morning?"

"I am coming to pick you up right now." Jacob stated and she heard the sound of engine behind. 

"I can't leave the apartment to him!" Maya reminded Jacob who sighed in response.

"I'll stay the night. We can leave for university together in morning. Now stay with m---"

The loud knock on her door made her almost drop the cellphone from her hand. She gulped and stayed silent as the loud knocking continued. How many times had this happened already?

"Maya?" Jacob's voice reached her. 

"He's knocking on the doo---"

"Maya! Sweetheart? I brought dinner. Let's eat together." James shouted, his sickly sweet voice just made her grip the phone tighter as she softly whispered, "Hurry up, Jake."

"Don't make a sound and see if you can find something to defend yourself in the room. I will be there soon, baby." 

Maya nodded even though Jake couldn't see her and searched with her eyes to see if she had something. Behind her James once again tried the handle to see if the door could be pushed open. The knocking became more aggressive.

“C’mon, sweetheart. Open the door for me.” James voice sounded angry as he once again tried to open the door. Maya simply tried to ignore the sound and grabbed a glass vase which felt heavy enough to kill someone. She simply sat behind the door with the vase ready in hand.

“I’m almost there.”

Maya simply sighed to let him know she heard him.

Why does she do that every time? Can’t she find a decent guy just once? Maya had begged her sister to leave James since the first time she ever met him but as if Nessie cared. She never did. If only the university would allow her to do a proper part-time she would have been able to afford a place herself. Consider how little Professor Bane needed her, she could easily handle another job and move out of this place. It wasn’t like he wasn’t paying her enough but she simply felt guilty even taking that money, it was too much then what she deserved.

“I’m here.” Jake breathless said in her ear and she immediately stood up and sighed in relief. She heard the bell ring and James had also stopped his actions. She heard him curse as his footsteps fade away.
