“Who is James?” The question was demanded without an ounce of unwillingness. In his full conscious and mind, he wanted to know the answer of the question. He hadn’t meant to eardrop but the room wasn’t sound proof and Jacob wasn’t exactly being silent so he just stood outside the door and listened. The only reason he had entered the office was because he didn’t like the way Jacob talked to Maya.
He watched as she stared at him like he had asked him something she was completely unaware of but he could feel her mind trying to form what the situation was.
“My sister’s boyfriend….?” The answer sounded more like a question since she was probably still unsure of how to handle his interest.
“Is he harassing you?” He had asked but he already knew the answer to that question, but the unexpected anger that greeted his insides was too wild, too insane, and too obsessive. His knuckled tightened on shelve he was holding into, wanting to crumble it in pieces.
Maya once again struggled in confusion but still nodded her head in answer. It seemed like she really was too honest for her own good. Chris simply nodded and leaned back, turning to put down his things and take a seat. Pulling out a file from his bag, he handed it to her and said, “I need 30 copies of it.”
His eyes watched as Maya woke up from her daze and slowly approached him, taking the file from his hand she made her way out of his office.
The second the door closed behind he pulled out his cellphone and dialed Abraham’s number who picked it up after three rings. His voice sounded groggy.
“Wake up, Abraham.” Chris curtly said and he heard the sound of rough shuffling on the other side.
“Boss! I am awake. I am awake.” Abraham’s suddenly very active voice replied.
“Send me the whole footage of orientation day of the club and see if you can find any photographs as well. I need footage from the start of the party till the end from every camera.”
“It will take a while to collect it, boss. Can you wait few hours?”
“Hmm.” With that Chris hung up. Though he wasn’t sure if this James had showed up that day but he wasn’t the type to leave stones unturned. Opening the first drawer of the desk, he pulled out a khaki color envelope which held Maya’s details. It was given to him by Professor Adler but he had never actually bothered to check them.
The few papers didn’t held anything much except for her personal details and academic information but fortunately it did held her current and permanent address. He dialed Jack’s number next who picked it up on first ring.
“Boss.” His as ever cheerful voice greeted him.
“I am sending you two addresses. I need everything you can find on the people who not only live there but also have passed through the place in past few weeks. Especially on the one which is in the city, the other one can wait. I need pictures, understand?”
“Yes, boss.”
Chris hung up again and forwarded the two addresses to Jack.
Now all he had to do was wait which usually was quiet enjoyable part in its own way but knowing that it concerned the safety of Maya, he wanted to get it over with. After talking with Dr. Eliot, his mind had become very clear about many things. He accepted that he felt something for Maya so he was starting with playing along with how his emotions wanted him to act. Whether it was anger, possessiveness or obsession, he wasn’t the kind to flinch away from how he felt before so he saw no reason to do it now especially if it concerned someone who he could possibly like. He would figure out rest of what he feels along the way.
