You stopped in your tracks and covered your ears, trying to block out the screaming coming from down the hall. The guard that was next to you didn't seem to be pleased and put a hand on your shoulder, trying to guide and lead you to your cell.
You gritted your teeth and tried to block out the thoughts of the person that was screaming, not wanting to tap into his emotions. The guard was now getting impatient, pulling out a taser. "Move." He ordered, pushing you a bit harder.
After a moment or so, you did, knowing that it wasn't good to piss them off. Soon you were back in your cell, dreading the sound of the lock clicking behind you. You sat on the hard bed, taking the bottle of pills you were supposed to be taking.
Right before you took two, a voice interrupted.
"Not yet." You recognized the voice that belonged to none other than Dr. Zola. As told, you put down the pills, wondering why.
"We need your abilities for a bit longer." He said, the door opening as he urged you to come. You stepped out, happy to be out of the small bland room, now walking next to the doctor, quite a few guards following behind you two.
"Y/n, you know I care about you, right?" He asked, looking up at you because of his shorter height. After some hesitation, you nodded. He did...at least more than the others around here.
"I recognize what you can do, and I respect you for it. All the others here are either scared of it or want to use it for their own purposes. I find you...fascinating. To see how much you've grown since the night I found you..."
While walking you were looking down, remembering your past. Involuntarily you remembered the people you hurt and the pain you caused... You remembered in the ways Dr.Zola helped you...helped you contain and control it as much as possible.
"I hope you recognize how much I did and gave up for you."
All you could do in response was nod and agree. It was true after all.
You came to a halt, standing in front of a door. "Now I want you to repay a bit of that, and help me as I helped you." As he said that, the door opened, revealing a dozen or so security guards and the same amount of doctors.
In the middle of the room was sat a man with a metal arm. His hair was grown out to his shoulders and his stubble had slowly started to form into a beard. His arms were secured, though it didn't seem like it would hold his metal arm.
He seemed to be sitting on a sort of machine, of which the purpose of you weren't informed about.
"I'd like you to meet James Buchanan Barnes, also known as The Winter Soldier."
The man that you now knew as...James seemed to be looking forward distantly almost like he wasn't completely present, making you a bit uncomfortable from the whole situation. To be honest, you didn't fully know what Hydra was doing since you were rarely even allowed out of your cell, and even then you had a bunch of guards directing you to another room.
"I-Is...is he okay?" You asked, unable to get any information since your powers were still being contained by your last dose of medicine which should wear off in a bit if you calculated it right.
"Yeah, he's quite alright. No need to worry. Though we could use a bit of help from you. You see, we had run into some difficulty. We want to help him become better at his job, and to do that we use this machine that helps block out some of the...thoughts...that might cause an obstacle."
You watched around the room, feeling anxious as you saw multiple guards blocking the exit.
"The problem is that it seems like his body started to resist, only causing him pain instead of progress. Now, we could use you to try and do what the machine does. Shouldn't be difficult, right?" He smiled assuringly, and you nodded again.
He took a look at his watch, pointing out. "I think your abilities should be back by now if I'm not mistaken. We'll turn up the machine, and when he begins struggling I'd like you to try break the barrier his mind's creating."
With hesitance, you nodded, starting to hear a bit of thoughts from a few of the soldiers in the room. To your surprise, you couldn't hear anything from James. At least not on the surface, but you could feel there was something buried beneath.
"Alright. Shall we?" He asked, earning a nod from one of the doctors that fired up the machine, creating a distinct electrical buzzing. One of the other men put a mouth guard in James' mouth, who still looked like he wasn't present.
The machine began to lower and James leaned back in his chair, the process seemingly like a habit to him. The plates attached to each side of James' head, causing him to scream into the mouth guard and pull against the restraints just a bit.
The amount of sudden pain you were hit made you jump, and it was all coming from him. It went on like this for a bit, but soon he started to trash and pull against the restraints harder, the machine being removed from his head.
"Now! Do it now!"
Shaken, you place a hand on each side of his head, looking in his frantic eyes. "James, look at me." You whispered, causing him to meet your eyes. His breathing was frantic and you tried to calm him, soon being able to make sense of his thoughts.
You remembered your instructions but decided to do something first. You looked in the hidden corners of his mind, piecing together his past. It became easier as you started to regain your full abilities, being able to make sense of it all. You could see him with someone else...a skinny boy...Steve. His best friend.
James' pupils dilated, the name falling from his lips in realization. "S-Steve..." He whispered, seemingly becoming more aware of the room. You saw all the things Hydra did to him...what Dr.Zola did...
You were filled with anger. He lied.
"You lied." You managed to choke out, pulling away from James who was slowly starting to come back to. "You said you were different, that you weren't like them..."
Your voice was full of rage, and you could hear the panicked thoughts coming from him. "No, no I-"
"Shut up!" You shouted, a few of the light bulbs exploding. All of the guns were aimed at you, but you could feel more in control than you ever have. You saw James break from his restraints, now some of the guns pointing at him, only moments away from firing.
"No." You ordered, each of the guards lowering their guns with a blank stare.
James was now free, trying to make sense of everything happening and recognized the doctor that caused him so much pain in the few past years, settling a glare onto him. "Dr.Werner." He growled lowly, ready to kill the man, though was still glancing around the room at the oddly behaving guards.
"Dr.Werner?" You questioned, your look angering even more. "You even lied about your name."
"No! It's not like that, please. You don't understand-" He was cut off as an invisible force wrapped around his throat and started to squeeze. he tried to grasp at it with his own hands but failed, leaving him to gasp and choke. You ran out of patience and squeezed harder, causing a snap.
His body fell to the floor, lying lifelessly.
"Come on kid, let's go!" James urged, grabbing your arm. He didn't see you as a threat and understood that you went through similar things as he had- being held by Hydra. You could see he was still confused but was willing to push that aside to try help you.
"Do you trust me?" He asked, holding out his metal hand. You looked at him and then down at it, reaching out and grabbing onto it firmly.
"I do."
