Blakewood high was bustling with students heading to their next class. All were dressed in their blue and black uniforms, and even though it was summer, all had socks that went to their knees. Of course there were exceptions to the dress code. One of them was Michelle Fernandez. Her white uniform stood out in the sea, and her pitch black hair helped with this contrast. She always wore her mid-shin, white, perfectly trimmed socks. And let's not forget her baby blue shoes, which were her staple piece of clothing.
Today she had a baby blue umbrella shading her from the piercing sun, and to match she had white cat eye sunglasses. Beside her was her friend since elementary: Paige Boss. She too was shaded by the large baby blue umbrella, but unlike Michelle wore no sunglasses. They walked arms hooked together, announcing to the world that they were proud to be friends. They didn't care about the lesbian rumors, or the talk about Michelle being Paige's Sugar momma. No, they only cared that they were friends, best friends.
Michelle unhooked her arm from Paige's to push a strand of her best friends hair behind her ear. She and Paige exchanged a smile, signaling a quiet thank you. Then they hooked arms once again and looked forward at the crowd of uniformed students.
"Do you think we'll have a quiz in Cal?" Paige asked, dodging an elbow that came her way.
"Possibly. All I know is I have a final in chorus." Michelle answered.
"I thought that wasn't until Friday."
"According to Josh it's today."
"You know you can't trust a word he says. Isn't he on vacation anyways?"
"Yeah he is." Michelle remarked.
"Still down for the party this afternoon?" Michelle looked ahead at her calculus classroom.
"Of course! Why wouldn't I be down?" Paige shrugged before retouching her shirt for the third time.
"I don't know." Paige looked up as if she got hit with an idea. "Remember to look nice." Paige added.
"When do I look bad?" Michelle questioned. Paige unhooked her arm from Michelle and have her a serious look.
"Never— you know what I meant." Paige replied as she opened the door to room 201. Michelle stepped in after closing her umbrella and then turned to the males in the back of the classroom. Her eyes landed on her longtime boyfriend, Kyle Scott.
"Kyle!" Kyle looked up from his buds to acknowledge her, but immediately looked back at them. Michelle sighed and looked at Paige who's jaw was on the floor.
"What the hell was that?" Paige said looking at the soccer players. Michelle shushed her friend before taking her hand and leading her to their seats. When Michelle and Paige were out of earshot of the boys Michelle decided she would share the news.
"Kyle thinks we should take a break until the choir trip."
"Excuse me? What was his reason?!"
"He just thinks that I've been needy these last couple of months." Michelle sighed and glanced back at Kyle. "You're the only one who knows."
"Your secret is safe with me girl." Paige rubbed Michelle's upper arm. "It'll be okay though. After all it's just a break." Michelle nodded and then set down her umbrella.
"Im gonna go to my locker real quick." Paige sat down in the seat in front of Michelle's after giving Michelle a nod of acknowledgement. Michelle walked out of room 201 and into the bright courtyard of Blakewood high. Her shoes clacked against the concrete sidewalk as she made her way towards the row of lockers underneath the upper floor. When she reached it she could already hear the person she didn't want to see.
