The day was cold on Niflheim as always. Fog hung low and would have clouded a normal person’s sight, but I was not normal.

I smashed my foot out into the Chitauri’s jaw and the sickening crunch made me cringe. The reptilian like figure crumbled to the ground defeated. Pride of achievement filled me but so did a little remorse.

An echo bounded off the tall icy mountains and I spun around to see my father slowly clapping a few feet away. A cruel half smile played on his lips. I titled my head down and stared at my feet so I could avoid having to make eye contact with him. “Brilliant,” he said “If you were trying to disappoint me.”

“I wasn’t trying to.”

“So it was purposefully?”

“As if!” I looked up and glared at him. He knew damn well I had done everything right and to the best of my ability. This training was pointless.

The half smile was still there, daring me to say more. I turned my head down again and dug my bare feet into the ice ground welcoming the burning pain. Loki crouched down and tilted my chin up with his scepter. I hissed and moved away from him. “Don’t be like that” he murmured and I imagined him rolling his eyes. I continued to walk, even as he appeared right in front of me. I smacked straight into him and was knocked down. Damn it I thought I hated it when he did that. He laughed and held out his hand for me. I had half a mind to bite it off. “Take it or leave it” he hurried.

I bit down on my lower lip, contemplating if I should take his hand or not. But I knew my father; everything was a challenge with him. If I was to take his hand it would be a sign of incompetence. “I can get up myself thanks” I pushed out a grin and tried to sound genuine.

As I stood up the ice started to break beneath me. I stopped moving instantly. This ice was supposed to be thick, thick enough for a thousand giants to walk across and never fracture.

“Loki” I breathed, starting to panic. I slowly moved my head upwards. The sound of ice still cracking beneath my feet made me shudder. “Ooh” Loki laughed, his brows coming together “Looks like you do need help after all.” He swung his scepter over his shoulder and started to walk away.

“H-hey!” My voice wavered “Don’t b-be like that” I tried to put on my best puppy dog eyes and hoped he would feel sorry for me… Not likely.

“But this is too much fun!” He chuckled as he turned around. “Tell you what, if you can make it back to the cave without having to have me fish you out of the water, I’ll ease up on the experiments for a week” My bottom lip started to tremble. If I fell into the water it would be instant death.

 I let myself laugh.

Death would actually be an improvement, but as much as I would love to escape, I would love to live.

I’ll ease up on the experiments for a week. Those words replayed in my mind like a broken record. It was actually a good offer… “What did you do to the ice, Lo… Father” His eyes seemed to smile when I said father.

“Why do you think I did anything?”

“This ice just doesn’t start to crack”

“So accusing” He shouted across the ice. “I just...” suddenly he was in front of me, only an arms length apart “Gave it a little tap” His finger lightly touched the tip of my nose and the ice gave way beneath me.

My lower body dipped into the water and froze instantly, making me lose all feeling in my feet and legs. My quick reflexes snapped into action and my hands shifted into claws. I dug my claws into my father’s thigh and gripped hard as he yelled out in pain. Despite the situation I was currently in I found satisfaction in his cry.

Oh geez I scowled myself I was turning into him.

As my body started to slowly dip further into the numbing water I shouted at Loki “You either pull me out of we both go in!” I hissed. His eyes squeezed shut and a beautiful look of agony spread across his face.

Red blotches started to appear on his dark green tunic. He muttered something under his breath and grabbed onto my left wrist. I yanked my nails out of his thigh and he started to pull me up. He pulled me up until only my ankles were submerged. He dropped my wrist and I unclenched his left thigh. He collapsed onto the ground panting hard and I scrambled the rest of the way out.

I lay down beside him, breathing hard wiggling my toes to try and get some feeling back into them. Loki growled and started to get up but fell right back down. I moaned and lifted my head up “You call that fun?” I mumbled. He laughed “Oh yes”

I rolled over onto my stomach and pushed myself up. My legs were still awfully numb but I could walk. I brushed the ice off my trousers and cracked my neck. Loki stood up brushing himself off too. A gust of wind flew through the mountain pass making me shiver. Loki’s teeth chattered. “Let’s get inside.” he began to walk down the mountain slope and towards the cave we called home. I reluctantly followed him, my head held to the sky.

The sky was dark and quite beautiful.

As I looked around a flash of green caught my attention but it was gone as soon as it had appeared.

Strange…

“Well hurry up,” Loki shouted “unless you want to try and freeze to death again” I would have usually retorted but I was still thinking about the luminous flash. The sky in Niflheim never had any activity. “Coming” I whispered as I turned to run after him.
