Chapter 5: party overload

It was the day of Brooke's party, and I needed to wear something relatively presentable. Looking through my clothing drawers, I sifted through each shirt, finding a flaw with almost all of them. Finally, I found a Vans shirt that looked cool enough. Slipping it over my head, I also grabbed some jeans and threw them on.

"Mom, I'm ready!" I shout down the stairs. Grabbing my phone off the charger and slipping my shoes on, I rushed down the stairs with more excitement and nervousness than I have ever felt before.

My mom glanced at me, and said, "Ok, let's go Oliver. Lily, I will be back soon. Be safe, and don't open the door for anyone!" I heard my little sister groan, replying "Yeah Mom, I got it."

Driving in the car felt like hours, since all of the excitement was bottled up in my chest, waiting to just explode. When we finally pulled up to the house, I took in all of the details. There were balloons and rainbow lights almost everywhere, each accompanied by streamers and signs. I followed the signs to the front door, which was wide open. Stepping through the frame, I let my senses be overwhelmed with the music, smells of food, and bright lights. I heard a voice call for me,

"Oliver, I'm so glad you made it!" I turned to see Brooke, who looked genuinely excited to see me. The other guys at the party were staring a me though, almost as if I was ruining their fun.

"Glad you invited me." I replied instinctively, still watching the guys out of the corner of my eye. "Well come on," Brooke practically shouted over the music. "Let's dance or something! It's no fun just sitting here!" Grabbing my wrist, she dragged me over to the dance floor. My face went bright red at the sudden contact, and I watched the back of her hair the whole way to the dance floor. She stopped and started dancing, and it wasn't the best, but at least she had confidence. All of a sudden, the blaring club song faded into Perfect, by Ed Sheeran. Brooke squealed.

"This is my favorite song!" She closed her eyes and swayed to the lyrics and they poured out of the speakers connected to the DJ's setup. I decided to join her, so I closed my eyes and let the music flow through through every space in my body. It had a calming affect.
