I was sitting in my room when I heard Theo, my brother, run up to my room screaming my name. "What do you want?" I yelled back. I ran out of my room and met Theo, followed then by Boris. Theo held up a small box with a lock on the front. "Before mom and dad split, Mom told me how Dad would steal shit from her. Dad and Xandra left to the Casino and Boris found this." Theo held the box closer to me. "Is this..."
I recognized the box.

Flashback

"These will look beautiful on you sweetie!" My mother held up a pair of earrings. Green earrings, with diamonds on the bottoms.

I stared at myself in the small mirror in our apartment bathroom. "I remember my first school dance!" Her angelic voice sang.
"Mommy. What if nobody wants to dance with me?"
"Then that's their loss. Or Theo could dance with you!"
I stared at my twin brother Theo, as he struggled with his tie.
My mother went to fix his tie for him as I headed into the other room.

End of flashback

"It's Moms." Theo said.
"I remember. But why did Dad take it?"
"Maybe to sell the stuff inside. For the moneys"
Boris said, as he walked a little towards me.
"Then why do you want it? And why am I involved with this now?" I asked.
"We run away. To the east." Boris said.

"New York." Theo said. "We need to sell the stuff so we can get out of this hell hole. And we can't open the box because you know the combination. Nobody else."

10-37-32

Those numbers ran through my mind.

"We need box opened. We need it now" Boris took his hands and put them on my shoulders.

"Am I going too?" I asked.
"We were hoping you would agree." Theo handed me the box.

"Where would we stay?" I asked.
"There is a guy I know. His name is James Hobart. I call him Hobie. After the explosion at the museum, a man called Welty told me to bring his ring to the place. So I did and I met Hobie when I was living with Andy at the time. I don't think Andy would take us in but I know Hobie would!" Theo explained.

I hesitated. I did want to get out of Vegas, but I don't want to be hunted down by Social services either. I know that would happen.

"What about social services. If we leave and Dad finds out we're missing, he would call." I asked.

"Then we leave without trace." Boris said. "Come on mon amour. A life just the two of us. Nobody else could tell us what to do and when we are allowed to see each other." Boris attempted persuading me.

"What about your Dad." I asked. "He planned on leaving for mines next week. Back to Ukraine, besides, the man couldn't care if I walk off face of Earth." Boris said, kissing my forehead. "Come on. We don't have much time." Theo said.

I looked at the two.

"Fine." I sat down with the box at my desk. I put the combination in the lock, and opened it.

I looked in the box, my mothers old earrings, my mothers necklaces and bracelets.

Theo rushed to the box.

"Ah! No! Your not getting to this until I look through it. You have something that reminds you of mom and I want something!" I said.

I looked in the box, and found an old locket. I opened it and found two pictures. Theo, when he was little, and me.
I put the locket around my neck.

"Find something?" Boris asked.

I looked in the box some more. "I'm taking what I want. Just wait."

I found my moms old engagement ring given to her by my father.

"How much you think this is?" I handed the ring to Boris."

"Lots of money's" he said.

I ended up taking the locket, and another necklace. Just one golden chain with a small diamond attached to it.

"Let's go."

———-

The three of us went to some sketchy pawn shop.

Boris spoke to the man at the counter in Russian, took the box with him to the back and within a few minutes, Boris came back with a bag of cash.

"How much?" Theo asked.

"38 thousand" He responded

"Damn. That should be enough." I said.

Now we're at the train station. Theo sits next to me on the right, and Boris sits next to me on the left. Boris took my hand and said "it will be ok. I can tell your stressed."

"I am stressed. I never did shit like this. Ever." I replied.

"This will be a new start" Boris said.
"Yeah. New start. That's good." I sighed in relief.
