Hannibal Lecter was based on an actual killer, Dr. Alfredo Ballí Treviño, who had the same mannerisms Anthony Hopkins portrayed in The Silence of the Lambs.
Thomas Harris, the author of the book that the movie is based on, thought Treviño was the prison doctor, but he was actually there serving time for killing a man, draining him of his blood before dismembering him, and burying the pieces in boxes.
