Bloodletting was an important part of any medieval doctor’s belief system.
A patient had two options: leeches or venesection.
With the leeches, a “blood worm” would be administered on the pertinent body part and the creature would—in theory—suck the illness out.
It sounds a little nicer than the latter option: the doctor would just slice open a vein with his “fleam” and hope for the best.
