It didn't take too much longer for the police to arrive. Two officers came in and, judging by the familiar greetings between them and Dylan, I figured they were the ones trying to help him find me.
"I hope you're feeling better, Travis," one officer said. She had said her name was Alice West. "We're just here to ask you a few questions about Tuesday afternoon."
I nodded my head. "I don't know how much I can tell you, Officer." I squeezed Dylan's hand tight, hoping my voice came out steady. "I don't remember much of anything."
"That's alright," the other officer, Alex Conden, said from where he stood by the door. "Just tell us what you do remember."
"Well..." I glanced at Dylan and he nodded encouragingly. "I was at work, no one else was in the store. Then this woman came in. She brought some books up to the register and I started scanning them. The next thing I knew, I was waking up in that basement or wherever the hell I was."
"If we get a sketch artist in," Conden said, "would you be able to tell us what she looked like?"
I shook my head. "Probably not. She was just another customer. I wasn't exactly paying attention to what she looked like. I was mostly looking at the book titles she had grabbed."Both officers nodded. Then West spoke, "We'll have you talk to the artist anyway, see what you can remember."
I nodded, although I would really rather not have to describe some dead woman to the cops. But if I denied them, they would know something was going on. I had no other choice.
They left soon after, thanking me for my time and letting me know that they'll contact me soon about talking to the sketch artist. Once they were gone, I looked back at Dylan.
"I don't know how I can keep lying to them."
"Just... think of it as a secret between us. You wouldn't tell them about our sex life, would you?"
"But they're not asking about our sex life."
Dylan sighed. "I know. And I know this is hard. But we don't have any other choice. They wanted to blame me, at first. It's always the spouse. I heard that once. Especially because I was hesitant about calling them in the first place."
I leaned back into the pillows. It wasn't fair. Dylan didn't do anything to me. I almost wished that I was attacked by a real living person, that way we could eventually get this situation sorted. There was no way this was going to end the way the justice system needs it to. Cops can't arrest ghosts.
"This sucks," I said.
Dylan nodded. "I know."
His eyes snapped to the other side of the room and I followed his gaze. I couldn't see anyone there, so I figured a ghost was here.
"What do you mean?" Dylan asked, then paused. "No-" He quickly stood and moved over to the window. "Are you sure?"
"Dyl, what's going on?" I asked.
He looked at me. "We gotta get you out of here. I'm going to get a nurse, see if you're okay to leave."
Before I had a chance to ask what the hell he was talking about, Dylan was out of the room. I looked back over to the spot he had been talking to. I wondered if it was Jenny, but I couldn't find the energy to speak up.
A few minutes later, Dylan came back into the room, followed by a nurse.
I shook my head before either of them could speak. "I don't think I should be released yet. Dyl, I know you want me home. So do I, but I don't even think I can stand right now."
The nurse smiled. "I'm just here to check to see how you're doing, Travis. I wasn't planning on letting you leave tonight anyway. You've had a rough couple of days. Maybe in the morning, though."
I nodded my head. When I blinked, it took all my energy to force my eyes back open.
"Hey," Dylan said, sitting back down in the chair. I couldn't read his expression and it worried me. "Go back to sleep. I'll be here when you wake up."
I grabbed hold of his hand. God, I missed him so much. I closed my eyes. Whatever was going on with him, I'd ask about later. "I love you," I whispered. But I wasn't sure if I actually said the words out loud or not, already falling back asleep.
A/N: Sorry I've been getting these chapters out so slowly! I've been super busy between work and I just moved, so everything's a mess right now.
Please like and comment! I haven't gotten a single comment on this book yet. I think it needs a little bit of attention...
Thanks! Hopefully I'll get the next chapter up soon.
