AT THIS MOMENT, MELODY WAS DELIRIOUS. Yet her senses were sharpened with adrenaline. She held her breath, straining to hear with every ounce of her concentration through the pain. She could make out a voice, someone calling her name in the distance. She knew it was a man's voice. However, everything was hazy as if underwater. Sounds faded into nothing.

Her face was bruised, covered with great blotches, and three of her ribs had been broken. Her thighs and abdomen had been bruised and lacerated.

Aside from the beat of her heart, no muscle would move. That pounding inside beat a rhythm to the words of his execution, the cold steel the boys judge and jury.

The gunshot was the one that ripped Melody from this existence, that silenced her laughter and made dull her eyes. Every blast to the gentle air was the one that laid her warm hands so very cold. It was as if that sound had become the murderer, a brutal shout from the coldest of "lungs."

The bullet had entered as if he was nothing, just meat, blood bones, blasting a cavity in his back as it burst crimson into the fading day. His face, so beautiful in life was frozen, eyes open, mouth slack, as he was propelled backward. His eyes held Melodys and in those fractions of seconds he was there and then gone, the warmth of the ages that had been his love simply vanished.

"I'm so sorry," She whispered to him, knowing he couldn't hear. "I'm so sorry, Thomas."

She looked down, saw that her hands and legs were shaking, and she suddenly felt freezing cold. "What have I done?" she mumbled, no other words escaping.

"What have I done?"

Melody woke without warning, eyes flung so wide each iris was a perfect orb of ocean blue. It was like there was no more air left in the world. And she was gasping, and she was panicking.

She could feel her heart beating against her rib cage, slowing every second. As the numbness of sleep slowly faded from her limbs, she could feel the cotron sheets underneath her. She opened her eyes and gasped in a breath, but nothing came and she choked on her own dry tongue. There was no air in this menacing world; lack of oxygen descended on her mind in a panic, in desperation she sucked in another breath, burning her lungs with a ferocity that consumed her.

It's as if a hypodermic of adrenaline had been emptied into her carotid. She strained into the utter darkness, breathing rate beginning to steady.
