The evening was far from over after Moira rescued me on stage. There were still artists to be introduced, so Moira walked me back to my table, then left me again after squeezing my forearm and giving me a wink. I hugged Kevin immediately and thanked him for being so supportive when I needed him most. He shrugged me off like it was nothing and hugged me tighter.
After the last artist was introduced and all questions were answered, instruments were set up and my mouth dropped when one of my favourite singers took the stage.
"Holy.. fuck." Kevin blurted out.
"I second that." I said, leaning forward to focus on the singer.
It wasn't long before my attention was taken away by someone asking if I would be willing to sell all 3 of my paintings in a set. I respectfully declined and turned my attention back to the performance, but was interrupted again with the same offer by another guest. It happened enough that I finally gave up on what will likely be my only chance to see the famous singer up close and left the table to find Moira.
I found her on the other side of the room engrossed in a conversation with a group of people. I waved when she looked in my direction and she smiled, then said something to the group before making her way to me.
"Hey." I said when Moira finally reached me.
"Hello. You look like you want to get out of here."
I nodded and replied, "I'm a bit overwhelmed and these heels are killing me. I'm sorry."
Moira put a hand on my shoulder, then said, "No worries. Go get Kevin and I'll have the car pulled around."
"Thank you so much, Moira.. for everything you said and just.. for being you."
Moira put her other hand on my cheek and said, "This was your night. I'm proud of you."
I wanted to kiss her right then, but I settled for pulling her into me and wrapping my arms around her. "You are the most beautiful woman in this room." I whispered in her ear."
Moira squeezed a little tighter, then let go and shook her head. "Not even close. You are exquisite and I wish I could tell them you're mine, but I'll settle for the inevitable rumours tomorrow."
"What?" I asked, confused.
"They're watching us." Moira answered.
I looked around and sure enough, there were several curious eyes staring in our direction. "What will they say?"
"The usual. Nothing to worry about. Go on, go get Kevin and I'll meet you outside."
It took a long time to wrestle Kevin away from the table of artists and in the end, he wanted to stay so he could go to some afterparty at one of the influencers home. He pointed at an attractive artist that was in a deep conversation with another and said he was going to get a ride with him. I hated leaving him here, but when I told Kevin this, he insisted that he would be just fine on the best night of his life. We hugged each other and I thanked him again, then made my way toward the exit.
I was stopped halfway there by a young woman that grabbed my arm and said, "She's going to destroy you."
"What? Who?" I asked, pulling my arm away.
"You know who." She said, pointedly.
"Moira? She's not like that."
"Oh, she is very much like that. Trust me, I know extremely well what she's capable of and you will too if you don't drop her now."
"I appreciate your concern, but I don't know you. I do know Moira though, and I believe her intentions are good." I said.
"Tsk. She already has you, doesn't she? Look, a word of advice: She may have you, but you won't get her. That woman is incapable of feeling with anything other than what's between her legs. You can try, but in the end, you'll find yourself alone at an event like this after Moira breaks your heart, trying to convince some other gullible girl to run while they can."
