"Hi Lauren," Sophie said warmly as she let Lauren into the room.
"Hi," Lauren said quietly as she took her usual place on the sofa.
"How was that picnic you told me about last time?" She asked.
"Um, fine. Camila wanted me to tell you that I'm going on holiday with her and my other friends for three weeks," Lauren replied.
"Oh, I'm surprised you didn't mention that earlier, Lauren."
"Was I supposed to?"
"Lauren, I'm concerned that you haven't been doing very well recently, can we talk about that?"
"What makes you think I haven't been doing well? I've been doing fine."
"You've missed a lot of sessions, you've been experiencing psychotic episodes such as hearing voices and hallucinating, and I've noticed some scratches on your wrist," Sophie explained softly.
"None of that is true,"
"Lauren, I think we need to reconsider inpatient treatment, I'm not sure that you're capable of keeping yourself safe right now," Sophie said, intently watching Lauren in attempt to examine her reaction.
"No, I'm not doing it," Lauren states angrily, standing up.
"Lauren, I can't let you leave right now because I'm worried about your sa-," she was cut off by the door slamming. Sophie sighed and hurriedly put away Lauren's patient file in a locked cabinet before making her way out of the therapy room.
Sophie spent half an hour scouring the hospital for Lauren until decided to page Camila.
"Hey Sophie, is everything alright?"
"Have you seen Lauren anywhere?"
"Um, not since this morning, did she not show for her appointment?" Camila asked, pulling her phone out of her back pocket to message her friend.
"She took off after I told her that I'm worried about her ability to keep herself safe," Sophie said with a sigh as the two walked over to the nurses station.
"You were going to section her?" Camila asked, slightly shocked. She knew things weren't going well, but she didn't think it was this serious.
"I need her to be assessed, at the very least, but I'm not confident that she'll pass the risk assessment," Sophie explained. "I need the hospital on lockdown, we have a vulnerable person missing," Sophie said to the nurse at the station.
"Yes, ma'am," the nurse replied, promptly picking up the phone to call it in.
"Let's keep looking, she's got to be somewhere in here," Camila said, checking to see if Lauren had replied to her message.
"Okay, I'll check upstairs, you check downstairs," Sophie said decisively. Camila nodded and the two split up.
It didn't take long for Camila to find Lauren. As soon as she walked out of the elevator and into the ground floor, she heard a scream which was undeniably Lauren's. She jogged towards the hospital's main entrance, which was locked due to the alert, and found a group of panicked nurses trying to calm down an extremely distressed Lauren who was sobbing hysterically and pulling clumps of her hair out.
"Hey, I'm here, Lo," Camila said, raising her voice so that Lauren could hear her over her sobs.
"Ma'am, she's highly agitated and aggressive, she seems to be hearing voices," a nurse informed Camila quietly.
Camila ignored the nurse, walking closer to Lauren.
"Hey, do you think you could tell me what's going on?" Camila asked.
"IT'S TOO LOUD!" She shouted, clutching her head.
Camila pulled out her phone and quickly messaged Sophie.
Camila: we are at the main entrance. Very distressed.
"NO!" Lauren shouted, forcefully pushing Camila, who fell to the floor, landing awkwardly on her wrist which she heard snapping.
"What's going on?" Sophie's voice asked as Camila stood up.
"NO!" Lauren shouted again.
"She's distressed and violent, but we can't administer medication against her will until she's been sectioned," Camila said.
"Lauren, can you hear me?" Sophie asked, walking over. Seeing Lauren's arms coming up again, presumably to push her away, Sophie quickly grabbed her wrists the way she had been taught to in resistance training.
"Camila, can you take one arm?" Sophie asked, struggling to keep both in her grip. Camila nodded and manoeuvred Lauren's arm into the standard lock used in psychiatric patients.
Lauren continued to struggle against the tight locks on either arm.
"Should we call the police?" One of the nurses asked.
"No, we can get her up to psych by ourselves and have her assessed over there," Camila said, looking at Sophie who nodded in agreement. "Call psych and tell them we're coming up, and only once you have word that we have her in a secure are will you take the hospital off lockdown."
"Okay, Lauren, we need to get you upstairs, okay?" Sophie said, unsure as to whether or not Lauren could even hear her.
They had only made it to the elevator when Lauren let our another scream, this time managing to break out of Camila's arm lock. Using her free hand she tried desperately to claw Sophie's grip off of her arm.
"We need back-up!" Camila shouted, struggling to grab Lauren's arm again."We need meds," Sophie muttered to Camila, as the two tried their best to contain the distressed girl. Nurses came rushing over, and soon Lauren was being held tightly by four pairs of hands.
"Can we get a bed?" Camila asked. Two nurses hurried away and returned quickly with a bed used for hospital patients.
"Okay, we need to get her onto this bed," Camila instructed.
"I'm going to run upstairs and grab some restraints," Sophie said, letting go of Lauren's arm which proved to be a big mistake, as the distressed girl saw it as an opportunity to try and break free. "I'll be back."
When Sophie got back, Lauren was pinned down on the bed with one nurse holding her head down, one holding her legs down and Camila restraining her arms.
"Lauren, if you don't calm down, we're going to have to put these on your arms and legs," Sophie explained, holding the restraints in front of her. "But if you can calm yourself down we can take you up without them."
"NO, NO, NO!" Lauren screamed, digging her fingernails into the skin of Camila's hand.
"Lauren, you're hurting me," Camila warned as Sophie proceeded to fastening the leg restraints around either ankle.
"I'll do the wrists," Camila said, taking the restraints from Sophie and quickly fixing them onto Lauren's wrists and then attaching the other ends to the railing of the bed.
"Take her upstairs," Camila instructed the nurses, taking a step back. Once the bed was safely in the elevator, Camila leaned against the wall and buried her face in her palms.
"Hey, are you okay?" Sophie asked, rubbing Camila's shoulder.
"Yeah."
