1 - First Time
there is no light without darkness,
just the same as there is no darkness without light.
it is the brilliance of light that fabricates shadows
and the intensity of darkness that assigns just how bright a star will shine.
before you, I had been content to rest as one of those stars.
that is also a sun.
appeased with the thought of hanging limp in the sky,
ruled by the transformations of the night around me that dictated the lustre of my glow.
but then you came.
and, although I may not have realised it at first,
the shadow of your heart was choking out the grievous jealousy of day
and casting me completely and utterly into the dark.
slowly.
because, the first time that I saw you
nodding at me in passing as you walked down that corridor,
backpack slung over your shoulders,
a star,
a burning essence of fuel and heat,
had fallen.
either from you or me, it is impossible to tell.
but it had fallen.
and now it was darker than before.
blacker.
and, looking back on it now,
perhaps it was the first time I realised that
I,
I could control the illumination of my own sky.
my own star.
but that fallen star?
it was foreshadowing of a wish that was yet to be made.
