I finally reach the door of my new neighbors' house and I knock on the door softly, not wanting to scare anyone. As I wait for someone to answer, I admire the beautiful plants on the front porch and the brick front of the house.
I didn't mean to drift off into space but I'm quickly snapped out of it when I hear a familiar accent say, "Sophie?" and I almost drop the dessert.
Harry?
. . .
I slowly look up to the boy standing in front of me. Instead of his nice, but casual school clothes, he is now dressed in a pair of gray sweats and a darker gray t-shirt. His hair is also a bit messier than during the day. To say he looked good would be an understatement.
When I finally get over my embarrassment, I say, "Hey, Harry, I didn't know it was you who moved in here. My mom told me to bring this over for you guys."
"Thank you, Sophie. That's actually kind of perfect, we were just about to eat dessert," he says with a light chuckle. The sound makes me smile. "Would you like to come in and eat it with us? Mum would love to meet you. She's been talking about going round the neighborhood all day."
I smile at his offer, which is very sweet of him. "I wouldn't want to bother anyone at this hour, but thank you so much for the offer, Harry."
And just as I finish my sentence, two little girls come running toward the door yelling, "Harry! Who are you talking to? Mummy wants you to start the dishes soon." One of them stops and looks at me for a second. She smiles at me and says, "Hi! My name is Lila. My sister is Jen. Are you Harry's friend? He doesn't have many friends."
Harry looks down at his feet when she says that. I crouch down to her height and respond, "Hi, Lila, I'm Sophie. And yes I am Harry's friend, we met a school today." I look up at him with a reassuring smile when I notice him shift uncomfortably.
I take that as a cue to stand back up from the crouched position I was in to talk to Harry's adorable little sister. "Perhaps I could come in for a minute." I shoot him a small grin and tell him to lead the way.
When I walk into the house behind Harry, it already looks a lot different from when the Dann's were still here. It also smells amazing. Harry's mother must be quite the baker herself. Harry takes the pie from me and leads me toward the kitchen where his mom is working hard to make a fresh batch of chocolate chip cookies. Some coincidence since Mrs. Dann would always have fresh cookies made when I came here.
"Mum, my friend, Sophie, has brought us a fresh dessert that her mum made us as a house warming gift. It looks delicious and I invited her in to have it with us since we're gonna have dessert anyway." His mom looks at me with a bright, beautiful smile and extends her hand for me to shake.
"Hello, Sophie! I'm Anne, Harry's mother. I didn't know he's already made some friends. How nice of you," she says brightly. She has such a nice and positive aura surrounding her, and I can feel it radiating onto myself. I return her grin with a slightly smaller one and tell her that it's really no problem.
I feel a small hand tug at my arm and when I look down, Lila is guiding me over to a chair in the dining room while her mother gets the cookies from the kitchen. I sit down next to Harry, who is cutting two small pieces of pie for his little sisters, cutting them into bite size pieces to make it easier for them. I can't help but smile at this small, but sweet action. He looks so concentrated on making them just right for the adorable little girls.
Anne walks into the room and I'm brought back to reality, tearing my eyes away from Harry cutting the pie for us all. The cookies smell heavenly and I don't waste much time before reaching over and grabbing two for myself, placing them on the plate with my piece of pie.
