Reckless in the Starlight
The Wanted (Nathan) fan fiction
Chapter 1:
"I can't wait until school is over," Hannah says to me as we walk out of school and into the freezing cold. It's just barely Fall, yet it's already extremely cold.
I shiver and run the zipper of my fur coat up to my chin. "What are you doing over winter break?" I ask her.
"Winter break? That's a couple months away, why are you talking about it now?"
I shrug. "I'm excited for it, okay? I have a feeling it's gonna be a good one." We walk out into the school parking lot, and I walk her to her car.
"Are you sure you don't need a ride, Taylor?" she asks me.
"No, Hope is gonna pick me up today. Lord knows why...I mean I have my own car."
She shrugs and gives me a small wave. "Let's hang out over the break, okay?"
I nod and smile. "Sure!" And with that, Hannah disappears into her car.
Suddenly, I see a white car make a sharp turn into the school's parking lot. My sister's not one for reckless driving, but she sure seems to be in a hurry today. I can tell that's her because I could see her bright red hair from a mile away. She pulls up beside me and makes a hand gesture for me to hurry up.
I climb into the passenger seat and look at her strangely. "What's wrong with you?"
She ignores me. "Buckle your seatbelt."
So I do as I'm told, still eyeing her weirdly. She speeds out of the parking lot, makes a right and continues fast down the road.
"Seriously, Hope, what's wrong?"
My sister is three years older than I am, and a junior in college. She normally has such a careless kind of attitude and is one of my best friends, aside from Hannah. I tell Hope everything, and she tells me everything as well. But something's up with her. She's keeping something from me.
"Would you answer me?" I say, my eyebrows narrowed.
"It's none of your concern, Taylor," she says, keeping her eyes straight forward, focusing on the road ahead of her.
"Just fucking tell me!" I exclaim, clearly frustrated. "You never keep anything from me, so just spill."
She sighs heavily, and I can see tears begin to well up in her eyes. "Lou just got really angry at me and...I swear he's gone insane. I swear." Nobody in my family likes her boyfriend Lou. I swear if he's done anything to her...
"What has he done?"
Hope makes another sharp turn, jolting me in my seat. I hold onto the handle above me for dear life. "He just...I swear he never normally gets this bad when he's angry...he just went off on me. He was like a totally different person. I don't know what to do anymore."
"How long have you been with this asshole?" I say, rage and frustration building inside me.
She grips the steering wheel harder. "Don't call him that. He's just...he's been having some issues lately. And we've been together for almost six months."
"What do you mean by he's gone insane...?"
"He's just...he's different. He's been really distant and weird lately. And I swear I think he's seeing someone else. And then of course there's the fact that he..." I can see her jaw clench, and her grip on the steering wheel get noticeably tighter.
"He what, Hope?"
She shakes her head fast, and I can tell she's forcing the tears back. It's killing me that she won't tell me what's wrong. Obviously it has to do with Lou, but there's gotta be more to it. I know Hope. If she thought he was cheating on her, she would march up to his doorstep and demand an answer. But she seems so vulnerable and hurt. And it's hurting me, too.
Hope pulls up to the house and her breaks screech to a stop in our driveway. Without saying another word, she unbuckles her seatbelt, gets out and slams the door behind her. I can see her wiping away the tears that have escaped her eyes as she reaches the door to the house and goes inside.
I sigh openly and get out of the car. Whatever Lou is up to, he better fucking stop. If I had half a mind, I'd call him from her phone and tell him off so bad his head would spin. But I don't even know the whole situation. And the weirdest part is, Hope isn't telling me it.
Hope doesn't show up at the dinner table. It's just me and my Mom. My parents got divorced when we were young, and we hardly ever get to see him. He used to be my hero. I used to look up to my father. And now, I'm lucky if I get to see him once a month. He just doesn't come around now that we're older. It's as if he thinks my sister and I don't need him anymore. Even though we aren't little girls anymore, we still are his little girls. Or are we?
"Where's Hope?" I ask my Mom, shoveling in a forkful of mashed potatoes.
Mom sighs and shrugs. "I don't know. She mumbled something about Lou and left. She said she'd be back for dinner, but unless she's suddenly turned invisible, I don't see that..."
"Has she told you anything about what happened with her and Lou?" I poke at the unidentifiable meat that's sitting on my plate, but can't get myself to lift it to my mouth.
Mom shakes her head and stares at me. "Has she told you?"
"Bits and pieces. They got into a fight. A really bad one. Over...God knows what. I don't know the whole story. She thinks he's cheating on her though."
Mom puts down her fork. "That piece of shit wouldn't dare..."
"If it comes out that he is, Ma, I swear...the cops are gonna arrest me for what I'm gonna do to him."
Suddenly, the phone rings loudly, echoing in my ears.
Mom looks at me, even though she's closer to the house phone than I am. When I don't get up from the table, she gets the hint and walks over to the phone. "Hello?"
I watch her face as the person on the other end talks, to see if I can read what's going on. I watch as my mother's face completely drops and she turns a sick, pale white. She nods her head and doesn't speak a word. As soon as the other person finishes speaking she manages to squeak, "Yes. Right. I'm on my way now." And with that, she hangs up.
"Ma, what? What happened?" I'm aware that my voice is full of panic, and I search her face for some clues.
She runs to the closet and grabs both of our coats and throws me one. She now looks green.
"Your sister's been in an accident. She's at the hospital now. Let's go."
We arrive at the hospital and my heart still hasn't lifted from my feet. I'm shaking so badly that I can barely see straight, and the tears that are blurring my vision aren't helping my sight, either. We run into the emergency room and get to the front desk. I know my Mom is asking for my sister's room but I can't hear a word. I'm too panicked and my mind is racing with so many thoughts at once. I don't even know what to do...
When we reach her room, a doctor in a long white coat is standing in front of her door, and it's closed.
Mom asks to see Hope, but the doctor shakes his head.
I close my eyes tight and try to focus on what they're saying. When I open them, I stare at the melancholy expression plastered on the doctor's face.
"Ma'am, I am so sorry to inform you of this, but your daughter has suffered some major injuries, and we did all we could...but she didn't make it. I am so incredibly sorry."
And with that, I fall to the ground and everything around me turns black.
