Chapter 4:

Once I can’t find any more tears left in my body to shed, I let out a long sigh. Nathan has been holding me close to his chest in his car for God knows how long. I had felt my phone vibrate several times, but I completely ignored it. I know it was my Mom, wondering where I am, but at the time I didn’t really care. I still don’t, to be honest. Although, I probably should. She’s already lost one daughter, I’m sure she doesn’t want to lose another.

I sniffle and wipe my eyes, but my tear stained face remains soaked. I blink hard and allow the last drops of tears that were left sitting in the slits of my eyes to trickle down my face.

Nathan shifts a little in his seat, probably uncomfortable from sitting in the same position for so long. He moves me so that I’m turned towards him and he wipes the rest of my tears away with his thumb. “Feel any better?” he asks softly.

I go to say something, but a muffled sob comes out, along with a few more tears. I cringe and do everything I possibly can to stop from crying. It works for a bit.

I look at Nathan through my lashes and he sighs and shakes his head. He leans in and plans one kiss on each one of my cheeks, kissing my tears away. It’s the cutest, sweetest gesture I’ve ever seen anyone do. Then, without warning, he leans in again and kisses my lips, a long, but soft kiss. I can taste my salty tears on his lips, but I don’t mind. It feels good to be comforted. Even if it is by someone I met off the streets.

When we part lips he says, “I honestly don’t think I can bear to see you cry anymore.”

One corner of my mouth turns up in a half smile and I quietly, not trusting my own voice, say, “I think I’m done for now.”

“Good,” he whispers into my ear, kissing the side of my head. “Are you ready to come inside?”

I nod my head, but then hesitate. “How long did you want me to stay? I don’t want to intrude…”

He shakes his head. “You can stay as long as you’d like, Taylor. As long as it’s okay with you. Will your mum be worried?”

I bite my lip and look down at my cell phone. Shit. “Let me just give her a call.”

“Here,” he replies, lifting me back into my own seat and helping me swing my legs over. “Do you want me to go so you can speak on the phone?”

As a reflex, my hand goes to his and I hold it down and shake my head fast. “No,” I say. “Stay. Please.”

He blushes a slight shade of red, nods his head and squeezes my hand comfortingly. “I’m here.”

With my free hand, I take my cell and dial my mother’s number. She’s called almost fifteen times. And she picks up on the first ring.

“Taylor!” she exclaims. “Where are you? I was worried sick!”

Quickly, I lower the volume on my phone so Nathan can’t hear. “Sorry, Mom, I’m with a friend.”

            She pauses. “Friend?”

“Yeah. My friend…Natalie. You don’t know her. Anyway, it’s late so I’m just going to stay at her house for a while. Just wanted to let you know.”

“Taylor I’d rather have you home…”

            “Mom, I’ll be fine. “
