Chapter 3:
Once we’re on the road, he asks, “Did you drive here?”
I nod my head. “Yes. I don’t know how though. I don’t even know where I am, to be honest.”
“Well we can pick your car up another time.” He pauses. “Did you get lost?”
I shrug my shoulders. “Kinda, yeah.”
He keeps his eyes on the road, and turns the heat up. “You must be freezing.”
“Not really. I can’t feel a thing, to be honest.”
“What were you doing in that alley by yourself?” My God, his British accent is to die for. It’s so deep and comforting and…well, British. You don’t hear of many British guys around here.
“It’s…a long story.”
He gives me a sideways glance. “I have time.”
I shake my head and switch the subject. “I don’t even know your name.”
“Nathan,” he states. “Nathan Sykes.” Every time he opens his mouth I am somewhat surprised by his gorgeous voice. “And yours?”
“Taylor,” I reply shakily.
“Well, now that we’re acquainted, why don’t you tell me what you were doing?”
“Where are you from?” I ask, trying to change the subject once again.
He chuckles a little to himself. “I know what you’re doing.” But reluctantly, he complies and answers, “Gloucester. It’s in the South West region of England.”
“And why are you all the way in New York?”
“My mates and I are on our winter break from school and decided to go on vacation. We’ve never been to New York, before. So we thought we’d give it a go. The five of us rented a house, not too far from here.”
“Oh,” was all I manage to get out. I keep staring at him. Even from the dim lighting in the car, I can tell he’s handsome. If his side profile from the passenger seat is beautiful, I can’t wait to see him full view and in better lighting. His voice alone makes me melt.
“Are you going to tell me now?”
I shake my head and say nothing.
“You’re as stubborn as my sister,” he says, and my heart gets caught in my throat.
“You have a sister?” I ask, twiddling my thumbs and trying to look busy.
He nods. “I do. She’s a few years younger than me. Her name’s Jess.”
“Jess. That’s pretty.”
He nods once more. “Do you have any siblings?”
I clear my throat and look out the window, trying my hardest not to start crying. But it happens anyway. The tears start flowing down my cheeks, and I do my best to make sure he doesn’t notice. “Not anymore,” I say, my voice very low.
But despite my attempt to keep my tears unnoticed, he notices anyway.
“Hey…” he says, pulling into the driveway of a log-cabin style type of house. He parks the car, unbuckles his seatbelt and turns his body to face me. “Taylor…”
I turn to him, full on sobbing now. I unbuckle my seatbelt as well, and bury my head in my hands just as I saw my mother do that one time. Just as I see her do every night, before I leave the house.
“Taylor, please,” he says, taking my freezing cold hands in his. He’s so warm. “Please, talk to me.”
I close my eyes tight and let the tears seep out, slowly falling down my cheek and onto my lap and his seat. I can’t ignore the pain. I miss my sister. “I miss my sister,” I cry.
“Oh, babe,” he says, bringing me close to him. Suddenly, I end up on his lap, and he’s holding me in his arms. “Is this what you didn’t want to tell me? You lost your sister?”
I nod my head and cry, and cry, and cry. “A couple months ago,” I manage to get out, before continuing to cry again.
“Let it out, it’s okay,” he says, holding me to his chest. He feels so incredibly warm against my skin. I can finally feel something again. I can finally feel something other than the numbness.
And Nathan continues to hold me, in his car, for hours. We barely say anything to each other. A few words in between my sobs. I even see a few tears run down his cheeks, although I don’t know why he’s crying. But he doesn’t let go of me. He just holds me and listens to me cry until I can’t cry anymore.
