He was shitting a brick. I kid you not he had already tried on three suits with six different ties. Four different coloured pants and two different pairs of shoes. He was shitting a brick! I couldn't stop laughing. I was sitting on the bed watching him shit this massive brick. It was amazing!
For the first time in my two years in Salvation Mercenary and the year that I had been dating Lucas, our day off finally lined up. I hadn't ever got the chance to go home.
Once he had finally settled on a casual pair of blue denim jeans, a smart button up shirt and a black tie, we left the small house and got into the car. The journey was quite quiet so it seemed like ages untill we finally arrived.
As we pulled up in lucas' car, we turned to each other and he took a deep breath. I took hold of his hand a squeezed it slightly.
"I love you so much!" I whispered, he gave me a sweet weak smile and got out of the car, shutting the doors slowly.
The curtains were drawn closed and no lights seemed to be on, however both cars seemed to be parked in the driveway. It was a one story house with a nicely tiled roof. It had two windows spaced equally either side of the front door.
Inside of the house was simple it was a short corridor or hallway that had one door to the left. That was the living room a modern style room with creme walls and white leather sofas and white carpets and a glass table, and an excessive amount of family photos.
The hallway ended in a quite up to date bathroom that was only done three years back.
There was just one other door to the right that lead into the kitchen. It had granite work surfaces and wooden chopping boards with white cupboards hung on the walls as well as traditionally on the floor. Normally there was a cake or cookies on the go or already baked. The kitchen was an open plan that lead into a dining room with a large rounded oak table with glass in the middle, with a cute little wooden fruit basket. Again the walls and shelves were littered with a startling amount of family photos. Except the furthest wall which had large sliding patio doors leading out onto a decking with a small hot tub.
The entirety for the flooring in the house was white carpet except the bathroom and kitchen that was oak wood.
From the bottom end of the dinning room was two oak doors either side of a bookshelf that stored more photos than books. This was my mum and dads bedroom and the other was mine. Mums bedroom was fairly modern white walls with a black bed frame and white sheets. Oak cabinets and dresses, desks and wardrobes.
However, my room which hasn't been in use since I was eighteen and was last redesigned when I was fourteen was still a bubbly purple with polaroid pictures of family and friends hanging in a piece of string. A single window opposite my bed which was a double bed with a purple duvet.
There was a bookshelf full of Harry Potter books by J.K Rowling and classics like Emma and Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen as well as Great Expectations and Oliver Twist and A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. Not that Harry Potter isn't a classic. I had a small tv on a white dresser and I also had a white desk in the corner stocked with stationary, posters of Take That and Spice Girls coated my room.
We approached the front door, it seems like she was already ready because just as we were about to knock on the door it swung open.
"Hi Emma love! How is it in the Salvation Mercenary? Have you got a boyfriend yet? Have you - "
"Mum I haven't even taken two steps in your door yet and I'm being bombarded with questions!" I grinned. Lucas was hiding behind me. "As for the first question, it's fine and I'll go into details later. But as for the second question well - " I stepped aside, almost falling over a plant pot. Lucas steadied me and he stepped up the step I was using to hide him.
"Hello, Mrs Arnold, I'm Lucas Evans." He was trying so hard to impress her, it was almost painful to watch.
"Sadie!" Mum corrected.
"Excuse me?" Lucas questioned the term.
"Mrs Arnold sounds old. Sarah or Sadie - Sadie preferably!" She examined him, looking him up and down. Assessing his body language. "I like your name, come in - sorry!" She apologised and gestures us inside. "Luke or Lucas?" She questioned.
"Lucas!" He answered looking at the pictures of me as a baby upon the walls
"So Lucas, how did you meet my Emma?" Mum demanded.
Here we go again, the, how did you meet? What do you do? What do you like? Why didn't I know this? Treat her well ! My mother only took interest in my dating life but she never wrapped the questions in to a normal conversation. They were out right questions. No regard for embarrassment. To me or whomever I had brought home. I stood at the end of the sofa as they sat talking on the overly pillowed couch. I was fiddling with Lucas' hair, running my fingers through it. Smiling and adding in the nods and the 'mmhmms' as and when they where needed.
"So are you two staying the night?" Now that caught my attention.
"Sure Sad - '' Lucas started.
"No we can't sorry mum." Her eyes dulled and her face fell, I felt so bad but I genuinely had to be somewhere. "I'd love to but I have some arrangements!" With the look mum gave me that wasn't enough, and she needed more details. "With Kathy and Aiden and I blew them off last time so I promised. I'll come see you tomorrow but then I'm back at SM!" At the promise of my seeing her, mums face brightened and the feeling of guilt faded away.
"Say I said hello Emma, you better come see me!" She said jokingly.
I gave mum a kiss on the cheek and we left. We walked down the flowered pathway.
"Do we?" Lucas questioned. I gave him a puzzled look and he got the hint, "Do we have plans with Kathy and Aiden?" With obvious recognition I sighed.
"Yes but I didn't want to tell you, Kathy and Aiden are my best friends. I can't keep this, us, from them anymore. Wait!" I said at the first sign of protest. "It's been a year. We've been a year, and my mum only just found out, because you've only just got back from the SPR base because of your last mission. We are telling them!"
