Chapter One: Hide and Seek
Mother was busy talking to her boyfriend, Brian Watson on the telephone. Jonathon wanted to ask her to sign his permission slip for school activities but he knew better than to interrupt an adult on their mobile. He poured himself a lemonade, sat down in the loungeroom and fiddled idly with the television remote.
The afternoon cartoon was a repeat that failed to hold his attention. He sighed and switched over to a documentary about penguins. The snow and ice looked cool and pleasant on the hot afternoon.
Jonathon must have been overcome by the heat and dozed off on the sofa, because he suddenly found that he was the same size and shape as Ginger-Fluff. His cat form jumped off the sofa and headed towards the laundry before Mother or his older sister, Teela, could see it.
Ginger-Fluff followed, glowing with anticipation.
It was not yet fully dark, so the laundry door was ajar, and the two animals were able to slip outside. The garden always seemed more exciting when Jonathon was in his cat form. Low bushes loomed large, offering cooling hiding places, while the straggly saplings loomed like tempting ladders begging to be climbed. An evening breeze ruffled across his furry back.
"Let's play hide and seek," Jonathon yowled to Ginger-Fluff.
Hide and Seek was a human game, but Ginger-Fluff had played before and knew the rules. To be fair, they stayed in the backyard, taking turns finding each other until they were tired. Then they agreed to go around the front where they could see the street.
