Chapter Four: Home for Tea

"I am glad we climbed up here," Ginger-Fluff said. "Except for Big Dog, I really don't like canines."

"The beagles might be alright if we got to know them," Jonathon suggested. "Beagles are nice dogs really."

"Maybe when you are a boy," Ginger-Fluff cried. "But Cute Calico and Spoilt Sopher are much more my size!"

"Mine too when I'm in cat shape," Jonathon agreed.

Big Dog and the Beagles sat very still watching for any returning intruders. Jonathon and Ginger-Fluff began to feel cramped. They stretched and a few dry leaves rustled. Big Dog cocked an ear, but seeing it was only the cats he did not react.

"I wonder if it is safe to get down," Ginger-Fluff whispered.

"I think we should climb around the back and jump to the ground out of sight," Jonathon suggested. "Then Mrs. Watson's fence will protect us from the Beagles."

"Good idea," Ginger-Fluff agreed, still keen to avoid meeting any new dogs.

They climbed down safely behind the fence and Jonathon wondered what he and Ginger-Fluff ought to do next.

He did not get to find out what happened because he woke up. Mother had finished talking on the telephone and was asking him whether he was ready for his tea. Even though he had an afternoon snack, Jonathon was always ready to eat!

After tea Jonathon showed Mother his permission slip and she authorised his school activities.
